Chapter 7 — Two months and one day after

"Mr. Capwell, a call for you," Rosa came to CC, who was looking through the exchange reports of the New York Times. "It seems it is the call from the medical clinic…"
CC grabbed the receiver.
"Yes, this is CC Capwell speaking. Do you have any news? OK, I am on my way."

A half an hour later CC was already entering the hospital…

"What has happened?" he ran into Dr Red. "Are there any changes in miss Duvall's condition?"
"Well, not exactly that way…"
"What do you mean?" CC was suddenly frightened. "Has her condition worsened?"
"Not, I meant a different thing. Today, in the morning I got a call from her nurse because the monitors that are connected to Miss Duvall have shown an unusual activity of her brain. We have to do more tests and find out if Miss Duvall is still pregnant…"
"What?" CC have cold sweat. "How? I mean, how can her baby survive after all her traumas? She was pregnant at the time of the accident but I thought she had the miscarriage…"
"Medicine is not an exact science, Mr. Capwell," said Dr Red with an important look in his eyes. "There are even stranger cases. I remember when I did some work in San Francisco…"
"San Francisco can go to hell! You tell me right now what it means that Mary's brain is showing an unusual activity. Is it connected with her baby?"
"We are not sure but it is possible. In any case, now that her body shows active reactions it's probable that we can help regain consciousness…"
"My God!" CC passed his hand over his forehead, collecting his ideas. "Her baby," he again turned to the doctor. "Is he OK? Is he healthy?"
"As far as we can judge" yes he is OK. But it is very preliminary data."
"It is a good mark," CC sighed deeply. "Thank God! But" he addressed Red again, "May be we can speed her recovery? To affect on it I'm meaning."
"I do not think so," Dr Red shook his head. "Though…"
"What?"
"Though probably her condition can become better if she will be at home. As any coma patients she need have more talk and more of her family members beside her… May be her relatives would want to take her home?"
"They can't! It is absolutely impossible! But I understand you and I will try to do something. I have an idea…"

* * *

"No, no and once more no! CC, you are definitely wrong this time! How have you come to this idea?"
"And do you have another suggestion? It may not be the best way, Sophia, but nevertheless it is a way. I have just spoken with Dr Lewis. He approves that Mason still needs to be preserved from any stress. He even told me that Mason's condition became a little worse in comparison with his last tests! That Mason can have the stroke or even die! How I can tell him all about Mary now? I don't want to be his hangman!"
"But your offer is crazy! Absolutely crazy! To transport Mary here, into the Capwell's house without telling Mason! To leave her with machines here and continue keeping it a secret from Mason! Do you actually think that he could stay unaware?"
"We can't leave Mary at the clinic. This is her probably her one and only chance to regain consciousness. Her baby will be born in a few months. We need to tell Mason about her. How will he feel if he will find out later that she had her chance, but we did not allow her to use it? I don't even want to think about it!"
"OK, CC. Do anything that you want. But I want you be aware" I cannot agree with your idea."
"If you will tell about it to our children. I do not doubt that they won't agree either."
Sophia gave CC a surprised look, who came out for directing his plan. To transport Mary into the Capwell's house — especially since Mason must not be aware about it — was a risky and very difficult thing.
