The Thunderstorm

Once having come on a business trip to Santa Barbara Jake stayed at his friend's. At leisure he was looking through old newspapers when he saw a photo of his patient there. Jake could not believe his eyes. Once again he scrutinized the picture and read the article of the helicopter falling and the death of a millionaire's heir and his wife. He told his friend everything. After a short pause the latter suggested to acquaint Jake with Cruz Castillo, the family's close friend just in case there was a mistake.
Jake agreed and met Cruz the same evening. When Jake told him the story Cruz was stunned, "It's impossible! There was an explosion!"
"He could have fallen out," Jake supposed. "There are many trees there, the branches mitigated the blow, but broke his ribs."
"Did he have any documents on?" Cruz asked.
"Then we wouldn't have puzzled over who he is and where he's from," Jake argued. "His clothes were all torn to shreds. The only things he had on were a watch and a ring."
"What kind of ring?"
"A big seal ring, with a black stone and an engraving, "To M. with love.""
"It's him!" Cruz cried.
"How's his family?" Jake asked.
"It was a shock to them." Cruz meditated on it. "You know what? May I go with you to make sure it is really Mason? Then I will have to prepare his family to break the news, and you will bring him here."
"Okay," Jake approved. "I was going to bring him to the city for an examination anyway."
"Does he remember nothing?" Cruz asked.
"Nothing at all," Jake sighed. "What alarms me is that he doesn't even want to recall anything any more."
