Chapter 116 — Younger brother
Mason found out Sophia in the living room of Capwell's house.
"Mason, I glad to see you!" She hugged him. "Do you come to see your father? But CC is not here; he's away for business trip and will return only at the end of the week."
"No, I come to see you. I need your help."
"O? Well so I'm at your service."
She nodded invitingly on the couch and they sat down.
"What is happened? Do you have some problems with Mary?" Sophia anxiously asked.
"No, we are fine," Mason shook his head. "I want to talk about the events of two decades ago."
"What?" Sophia frowned.
"The Great Valley School. Do you remember it?"
"I remember, yeah... but what is that for the school?"
"I'll explain soon. But at first tell me, please, earlier did you tell me the truth about the reasons of Colin's fall? It really was the accident?"
* * *
"Brother?" Mary stunned repeated. "But Mason has not any brother of your age. I am his wife, Mary Capwell. And what's your name? If your parents know where you are?"
"I'm Charlie Pepperidge. My mother knows I'm here. It was she who sent me here."
"Pep... Oh, I get it. You're maternal half-brother of Mason. Did you come with her? Come in, please."
The boy obeyed, curiously looking around.
"No," he asked suddenly. "I'm not half-brother. I'm just brother of Mason. And where is he now?"
"He is in the court. He's working as a lawyer. And why did you come alone? Where's your mom?"
"In London. I came alone."
"So far? Across half of the globe? Or you ran away from home?"
"No, of course. I did tell you, my mother sent me here."
"Okay, then we faces it. And where are your belongings?"
Charlie reluctantly broke away from examining for the house and ran out to take his travel bag. It's loud running on the floor and woke up Mickey.
Mary went to the crib and began to rock her baby.
"Is it Mason's baby?" Charlie stuck to her.
"Yes, it's Mike," the baby already calmed down, but was still wake. "Charlie, may be you have some note for Mason? Or a letter?"
"I have one," he nodded eagerly. "But I will give it directly in Mason's hands."
"Sure. I guess you must be hungry? Do you want something? May be cocoa and toasts?"
Charlie nodded and quietly licked his lips.
* * *
"Colin? Oh, you mean the boy who fell out of the bedroom window? Of course, it was the accident. Why you doubt?"
"It seems that Colin call me vendetta. Apparently he thinks I'm the cause of his fall. Therefore, I ask again: did you tell me the truth?"
"Yes, Mason, I told you all that I knew," Sophia frowned, trying to remember the details of the time. "I think I called the police and this case's detective said that it was the accident. I gave you his word. And why did you doubt?"
Mason apparently relaxed.
"I thought you could sugarcoat the truth, wanting to spare me from feelings of guilt."
"Yes," Sophia nodded. "I remember that you blame yourself... you gave the scream and later you thought that he could fall down because it." Mason inwardly shivered, remembering these not the most pleasant moments of my life. "But I did not lie to you."
"And if I was blamed for his fall?" Mason asked with interest. "What would you do?"
"Mason, you were a kid. And you're not pushing the boy out the window."
"It's not the answer."
"What do you want to hear? What I'd give you up prison of juvenile criminals? If it's more consistent with your view about the stepmother?"
"No, I'm sorry. Just I cannot understand it--"
They were approached Rosa.
"Mason, there's the call for you."
"Who is it?" Mason stands up.
"It's Mary, Mason."
"Mary," Mason picked up the receiver from the nearby phone. "What is happened? Is something wrong with children?"
"No, they're fine. But you'd better come home as soon as possible. Here is the boy who said he's your brother. Son of Pamela and your father probably."
"What? And my mother? If she is here too?""
"No. He came alone."
"I'm on the way," Mason slammed the receiver back on the phone.
"If Pamela is in the town?" Sophia some tightly asked.
"No. But it seems that my father has more one heir. I'll call and Mason rush out of the house.
* * *
"Why did you say? Do you not believe me?"
Charlie sullenly watched as Mary changed Mickey and has been looking at her watch.
"No, I just not aware that Mason has another younger brother."
"Maybe he did not say you?"
Mary silently shook her head.
"Mason is on the way," she said. "I think everything will be make clear soon."
"Yeah. And you'll see that I'm really Mason's brother."
"I have no doubt about it," Mary smiled. "You look alike him."
"Really?" The boy put his mug of cocoa aside.
"It's true. You will see him soon and understand it. If your mom was telling you about Mason?"
Charlie mumbled something unintelligible.
At this point, there's opened the front door and rush in Chip and Samantha, who's following by tired Christie.
"They are just unbearable today," she complained and stumbled look at Charlie. "Who is that?"
"It's Charlie, the younger brother of Mason," Mary briefly replied.
Christie rounded her eyes, but his older sister glanced "don't ask". Christie shrugged and glanced at the boy.
"They look alike," she appreciated squinting. "Come on, the brother of Mason. Help me to scrub your nephews."
"Are they his children too?" He squinted suspiciously.
"Sure. Chip and Samantha."
"Chip? What is a stupid name!"
"The good name, homely. Come on, help us," Mary hugged his shoulders.
Charlie frowned with displeasure, but he went after them. On the way Mary exchanged glances with Christie. The case gained more and more strange turn--
