Together and Forever

Chapter 12 — To Accept an Important Decision

Mary was sitting on the deck, in the bright sun, a wide smile on her face as she was looking at Mason floating in the water. She didn’t want to go into the water — she only started to dry, but Mason was probably a fish in his past life.
As if he heard her thoughts — Mason turned to her, taken his hand of the gangway and waved her.
"Come here! Don’t you feel hot?"
Mary shook her head — no — and moved into the shadow. It was very pleasant to her — to watch Mason receiving pleasure from swimming. She felt herself almost happy. Almost. She winched. As if she could hear someone near her say that word. But there was nobody here beside her. Only she, swimming Mason and this yacht.
In that moment water, which seemed very cold to her, were poured down on her, and wet hands embraced her shoulders. Mary squeaked, but then with pleasure nestled to Mason.
"Mason!"
"And who can it be, besides me? Mary," he's taken her face in his hands. "Mary, what have I done wrong?"
"Why do you think that you’ve done something wrong?" She was surprised.
"You seem so sad. What do you think about?"
"About returning to the real world," Mary finally expressed in words the thing that made her suffer and felt relived. She looked at Mason. He became serious. "The real world separated us in the last time. What will it make us do now?"
"He’ll make. Nothing."
"Not everything depends on us. Mason, I’m still Mark’s wife. Legally."
"As if this year never happened, right? The same problems."
"Now it's even worse. I am officially considered dead yet."
"Are you sure? May be Mark--"
"He didn’t. I saw his documents, the word "widower” was written everywhere."
"OK. So you are afraid of the real world?"
"I am afraid. And I have reasons."
"I agree that you have reasons. But I have another offer — tonight we will return to Santa Barbara, you will live in my apartment and meanwhile I will think about our future. I will find a way to save us from potential encroachments of Dr McCormick."
"And why do you think what they are only potential? Whence do you know? May be Mark already knows that I’m with you?"
"I’m sure that he doesn’t. How could he recognize me? It’s incredible from such a long distance. My car was hired by the name D. Smith."
"And phone number? He can find out what numbers were called to his home and at once he will understand everything."
Mason sighs.
"Well and what if he will understand? Don’t worry, I will find justice for him."
"I am not so sure and I’m afraid."
"Just trust me. Trust me and everything will be OK. There were enough fears for you. So do you agree?" Mason led his finger on her chin and looked in her eyes.
"Yes, of course. With you — even to the edge of the world."
"Mary... But there I will have my babies--"
"This is not so terrible," Mary laughs softly. "I am a nurse, if you’ve forgotten. Children don’t frighten me."
"Yes, I forgot--" Mason embraced Mary and pressed him to her head, inhaling the delightful smell of her hair. "So much time passed! OK, let's go to swim!"
Then making a lot of noise he jumped down from the board of the yacht and lured her by his finger. Mary smiled and jumped down to the water too.
