Chapter 125 — Unexpected Guest
In next morning the doorbell rang in the midst of breakfast.
Mary left the table and went to open. To her surprise Gina was on the verge.
"Hello, Mary. I want to see Mason," Gina immediately said.
"Mason, it's for you," Mary called and let her in.
"Who?" Mason asked throwing his napkin on the table and went out to them.
Meanwhile Gina curiously looking around the spacious living room and smeared Samantha and Chip at the table. Her gaze lingered a little longer at Mickey's crib and went back to Mason.
"I need your help," Gina said seriously. "CC demands the sole custody for Brandon."
Mary shivered.
Mason took Gina at side: "I'm up to my ears with work right now. Has my father any reasons to take Brandon?"
"He does not need reasons," Gina snorted. "He just comes and takes what he wants."
"It's all?"
"I have no an idea. Will you help me or not?"
"I'll," Mason sighed. "For the sake of Brandon. But I must know what the dirt have my father for you."
"I'm a little bit low on the hog and turned out the delay in paying for school," Gina voice said in a low.
"And?"
"I asked CC to help, but he did not want to give me a loan."
"Well, I can see why," Mason chuckled.
"And then he said that if I can not provide the good education for Brandon, I should give him in."
"In some ways he is right," Mason said. Then paused and added: "It looks like he is in the active phase of his father's feelings now. I'll see what I can do."
"Thank you. And Mason, I'm sorry that you had so the mean friend! Fortunately Brandon goes to the school where it's seems impossible."
"What you mean?"
"Did you see Santa Barbara Times yet? Then I recommend reading Colin Stewart's interview in it."
"I read it. And now your time is over," Mason is almost pushed Gina out of the house. "I call you when I talk to my father."
"Useless to talk with him," they heard Gina's voice behind the door.
Mason sighed and turned to Mary.
"That's real CC Capwell," he said. "He can not remember about Brandon in months until once again he's go into overdrive."
"He just found out about Charlie. Perhaps he feels that spent too little time with Brandon."
"This does not necessarily require the sole custody."
Mason leaned over and picked up the morning newspaper. Unfolded.
"Damn!" escape from him when he saw his own face on the first page. And photo of Colin in his wheelchair and very significant words "Colin Stewart vs. Mason Capwell."
Mason quickly found the article and go deep in reading. Mary came over and began to read over his shoulder.
Colin blew his little bomb! The article detailed described what she learned the week earlier by Mason. But the story now looks very different. Colin described Mason as the arrogant son of oil tycoon, vindictive and cruel boy. Too hard to believe that he once called Mason his friend. Colin himself appeared as the intelligent boy who found the courage to not just fight with his disability but also to make a career thanks to his talent. He talked about his family, his wife whom he met in rehab and the children who he adores. In general it is embodied the ideal image of heroism that marred only this dark story. The article was ended with the Colin's words:
"In spite of the accident that had broken my life I can call myself as a really happy person. I have the lovely family, my wife and children, I built the great career and my heart has no room for hatred. However I believe that every crime must be punished. And I want to see that it happened in my case ".
"Said you!" Mason exploded. He threw the newspaper on the table and walks around the room.
Christie wisely takes children to wash hands.
"You'll be late to court," Mary reminded and picked up the newspaper. "By the way here are the details I had not heard."
"I noticed," Mason thoughtfully looked out the window. "He became convinced of my guilt after our former classmate told him that he saw as I'm packing my belongings and dropped the key."
"The interesting interview," Mary said finishing reading the article. "It seems that he believes in his words."
"Well, there is one thing where he's surely lying — I saw the hatred in his eyes when we met a couple of days ago. He wants to take revenge on me. But," Mason looked at his watch," I really must go. And I need to speak to his father about Brandon."
"I see. Try not to linger."
Mary kissed Mason and followed him to the door by eyes.
Mickey whimpered, she went to the crib and took his little son on hands. Chip and Samantha downstairs and jump around.
"We want to walk! We want to walk!" they crying in unison.
* * *
In the afternoon Mason drove to Capwell's house. He already managed to speak with CC's lawyer and knew that CC determined to take Brandon from Gina's care.
To his surprise he found here all Capwell family and Mary with the children, accompanied by Christie.
"I thought you were at home," he whispers, embracing her.
"I was called Eden. I could not come."
"What's happened?" Mason involuntarily turned to her sister.
"Yes, something did," Eden said. And after a pause she added: "I and Cruz decided to get married."
"Wow!" Mason hugged her. "Congratulations! And you too, Cruz. When going happen the happy event?"
"Month later, on August 20."
"I'll be there," Mason promised and then asked: "Is the father at home?"
"In the study," Eden said. "What's the matter?"
"Brandon. More specifically in his wishing to take the boy from Gina."
Eden winced and held look at her older brother who bent his steps to CC's study.
However, the conversation of father and son came out the short one. CC flatly refused to withdraw his demands, and Mason could only get him to the temporary agreement: in the next month Brandon can live in Capwell's house without a change in custody arrangements. However, he doubted that Gina would like the solution.
As soon Mason left out the room as Cruz takes him.
"Mason, you know the name Darwin Beckett?"
"I think I do not. And who is he?"
"The guy that saw you picked key up the floor. I've had the interesting conversation with him today."
"And what did he say?" Eden came to him. And she was followed Mary.
"He was in contact with Stewart all of time. And he claims that Colin was not only obsessed with revenge on Mason, but even never mentioned that he blames him for something. And only about year ago he appeared at Beckett's home and became to ask questions about that night."
"When I recently met Colin he said that he hoped to recover for a long time and only recently decided to take revenge when he realized that nothing can do. But he said it happened about six months ago. But it seems to me that there rather is a year if not more," Mason said. "Given that McClain as how many he knew about the events of last summer... I think Colin was already watching me long ago. Otherwise how he could know so many details about McCormick and returning Mary?"
"So he does lies," Cruz resumed. "I'm trying to get info about Ross Dermont but still do not work. By the way Mason you are greatly helped my work when you putting the charges against McClain. I think it can be valuable information."
"Did you sue him?" Mary looked at Mason.
He nodded.
"As soon I learned that he had no relation to McCormick."
"He deserves to be punished for your kidnapping," Mary involuntarily clung to Mason's shoulder. "When I remember how many I'd passed though at this day and night--"
"And he will get it," Mason hugged her. "I promise."
