Chapter 133 — Rest We Can Only Dream
The house was unusually quiet without the older children. No one screamed, run, asked to draw any picture and not complain on their siblings.
Christy early upstairs to her room, Jimmy was out for shooting for the local magazine.
"I'm feeling not quite the thing," Mary said with a sigh and sit down on the sofa in the living room. "The silence rings in my ears."
"And screams in mine," Mason said referring to Mickey's recent hungry crying.
They were silent.
"Yesterday my father offered me the position in the company," Mason finally said and looked at Mary.
"And your answer was?" She forced herself to focus on the conversation. Her mind still was flooded with memories of the funeral so look alike to her father's funeral.
"Nothing. I'm not sure it's worth to agree."
"But you have always dreamed of working with your father."
"In the past I did. But now I no longer need to prove something to him."
"And yet his offer to get you."
"Old habits die hard," Mason shrugged.
"I think you already knew the answer," Mary frankly said. "You do want to work with CC."
"Is it so obvious?" Mason sadly smiled.
"I just know you," Mary put her hand on his shoulder. "Agree."
"I'll think," Mason evasively replies.
At this point the phone rang.
"No! No again!" Mary exclaimed.
Mason picked up: "Mason Capwell's residence. Who's talking? Yes, I'm listening, Charlie. What? Why? I think my father knows best. Oh, OK, I'll come."
"What happened?" Mary tensed looked at him.
"My youngest brother is asking for help," Mason said without smiling. "The father just returned to the town. He learned about Charlie's fight with Brandon and grounded him. I will try to negotiate an indulgence for the young sinner. Will you forgive me?"
"Sure. Just do not be back too late."
Mason left and Mary stay alone. She looked into the nursery, wandered through the house then returned to the living room and turned on TV. Switching channels, stopped on a movie, but was unable to take in the plot, being deeply in her thoughts about her father and his twin brother, about her mother. She remembered Theda's second husband and Steve. Mary involuntarily shuddered, she was disgusted.
"Mary?"
She looked up and saw her younger sister in the doorway. The house was built in such way that the flat above the garage have the straight way into the main house without going through the front door.
"Come here," Mary called her.
"Is not here Mason?"
"No, he went to Capwell's house."
"Something serious?" Christy sat on the sofa and picked up her legs.
"I do not think," Mary shook her head and smiled: "Do you miss Jimmy?"
She nodded.
"Do you wish you had gone to the funeral?"
"No. I do not like them. And I hate Uncle Larry after all. Why did he leave us again? He promised that he never go away anymore."
"You're become to love him, are you?" Mary sat down beside her sister and put her arm around her shoulders. "He did not want to die. It was just the accident."
"So he had to drive more carefully. And now me and mom alone again. And Jimmy disappeared somewhere."
"Christy, what's the matter?"
"Nothing."
"Christy--"
"Nothing. I'm just feels some lonely. I always desperately miss when Jimmy leaves out."
"He will return tomorrow. And now you have me."
"I know," Christie smiled. "I'm just too used that I have a family. Several years ago I would have thought that it's just a normal state of things. Now I upset by it."
"You did the long way, sis."
"You too," Christie touched her hair. "You even came back from the dead to be with us."
"I think we all deserve a little happiness. And Mason too."
* * *
"Father, do not you think that you're going a little too far?"
"It's none of your business, Mason."
"Charlie is my brother."
"He deserves to be grounded."
"You need be at home more often. He already forgot the whole event and made it up with Brandon."
"Your mother gave him to long the rope. She could not deal with him, and now I can see why. He grew up without the father and needs the good discipline."
"He was just the boy, not a soldier. I remember that once you've tried to discipline your eldest son."
CC glanced at him.
"And more then one time. Do you think it is useless? Do you think that he will grow up to be the same as you did?"
"Do you're dissatisfied with something, father? Oh, you wanted me to become an unprincipled politician. And I become just a brilliant lawyer."
"What do you want from me, Mason? Charlie is my son and I decide how to punish him. Grounded for a week that is enough. He is always kicking against the pricks and pick on Brandon. Let him sit alone and quiet."
"Do you think he'll stay alone and quit? From that I've managed to learn about my brother I'm sure he will run away from the bedroom on the first day. He'll bore."
"And what do you suggest, Mason? Do not punish him at all?"
"Return Brandon to Gina. Then Charlie no longer defends his territory."
"Absolutely no way. Gina did not receive anything beyond the agreement. And Brandon still shows himself!"
"Father, do you want bloodshed? Or they'll hate each other as me and Channing did?"
"In short, Mason. Do you have any other suggestions?"
"Let him be grounded in my house for the week."
"Your home as the prison? A curious view. But I am afraid that such punishment would be too weak. Brandon had both psychological and physical trauma because his behaving."
"Do you want to punish him or break? I have the impression that you work off for Pamela."
"Do not talk nonsense. Okay, take your younger sibling away. And tell him that just one more fault — and he will be moved in the private school with strict discipline."
"Father, The Great Valley School no longer accepts students."
CC looked grimly at Mason and silently marched to his study.
Mason sighed and hoped that Mary would not be opposed. His brother was not a gift in any way.
