Chapter 18 — An Unexpected Visit and A Strange Offer
Very angered Mark went in his motel room. Duke's puncture was so inopportunely! He is just an idiot!
In this very moment the phone rang. Mark jerked and reluctantly lifted the receiver.
"Your time expires the day after tomorrow in 18 00. I hope that you prepared the documents, because otherwise you will have A LOT to pay for--" These words were told by a husky voice and worked on Mark like a bucket of cold water. He blew away gas as stabbed air ball. After hearing short hooters Mark hang up cautiously and sat on the bed. What to do? How to get these papers? It was already midnight
Mason was talking on the phone, keeping an eye on sleeping Mary.
"Yes, Dan. I want to get all possible information on this person. Including the color of his pajamas and the name of the restaurant, where he orders his fast food. Yes. Yes, I will wait."
Mason hung up and called another number. After finishing the conversation, he hanged up again and started to think. So the guards are being supplied. Dan will dig out all that there is to know about Mark. But still what are those papers he wants to get?
Mary started to move. She turned over and mumbled. Mason quietly approached her and squat near her.
"Daddy, I brought you the orange... Uncle Larry told that it has many vitamins... Uncle Larry is good... He is not crazy--"
Mason was surprised. Mary never spoke about her relatives and her dad was never even mentioned. But she loves him! Suddenly he felt a kind of shame because of the involuntary penetration to the part of Mary's past life that was unknown hitherto for him; he stood up sharply and left to the kitchen.
After drinking coffee for vivacity, he took very fat code of laws and went in deep into his reading. There will be a way to relieve Mary from this bastard!
* * *
Mason sunk so deeply into his reading that it took him some time to catch that the door’s bell is ringing. He threw the book on the sofa, jumped to the switch and after switching off the light, cautiously approached the door. There was no sound outside. Mason tiptoed as he went to get the candlestick, which was already good help for him once, and nestled in the jamb. Probably, his movement was heard, because outside the door he heard a kind of rustling and then... the voice of Mark.
"Mason, open the door. I know that you are in there. We're needed to talk."
Shocked by such an impudent Mason stood stunned for an about a minute still holding the candlestick in his hand. Then he came to his senses and developed rough activity. After leaning his "weapon" on the wall, he quickly run to Mary and lifted her on his hands. Mary didn’t wake up, just nestled on him and embraced his neck. Mason took her into "her" apartment, put her on the bed and covered her. Mary nestled in a cozy like a small cat. Mason went back to the apartment, locked the door, which lead to Mary’s, then closed the door of the bedroom and only then approached the front door again. After taking the candlestick again, he sharply opened the door, ready to meet next bandit. But what he saw on the stairs was only Dr McCormick.
"What do you want?" Mason addressed him not too kindly.
"To talk. Simply to talk. Can I come in?"
"No, you cannot."
"Why are you so afraid, Capwell? I won’t do anything to you."
"And I am not afraid of what you’ll do. I just don’t have any wish to see you."
"So why did you open the door?" Mark grinned. "OK, we had enough small talk. I have to talk business with you."
"I do not want to have any businesses with you, McCormick."
"But you do want to get Mary, right?"
"Mary--"
"Don’t speak as if you think she’s dead! We both know that she is alive and lives with you," Mark grimaced. "Our talking is not about that. Here is my offer — you’ll give me back my papers, which Mary has taken away from my home casually and I’ll sign a divorce and open for you the road to your happiness."
