Chapter 4 — The Voice From Past
"Mason," the female voice repeated. "It is Kelly. Are you OK?"
Mason felt a relief mixed with a disappointment.
"All right Kelly. I just got lost in my thoughts. Why do you call so late?"
"Late?! It’s not even late yet in children's time, it is only 9 p.m."
"9 p.m.?" Mason looked in his watch. Really. It seemed to him that it’s already passed midnight.
"Mason, is you sure that you are OK?"
"Yes. It just seemed to me--"
"What did it seem to you? Mason, wait for me I’m coming." And the line was dead.
Kelly came in half an hour. Together with Mason she looked on the sleeping babies, and then she sat opposite him in the living room and asked: "Mason, what happened to you? Why were you so frightened when you heard my voice?"
"I do not... I do not know. There was a moment when it seemed to me that it is not you--"
"And who? Who, do you thought, call?"
Mason got up and after coming to the window he looked out. There all is OK, but he answered Kelly. "You will decide that I’m total crazy--"
"I won’t decide that. Mason, tell me."
"OK... Kelly, in the first moment I thought that I hear the voice of... Mary."
"Mary? And I thought--"
"Yes, I know that you thought, that I thought that you were Julia... Probably this would be more logical. But I have thought that Mary called me. I’m completely crazy--"
"Mason, you loved Mary. Everybody knew this."
"Loved... The love is a strange feeling. The person is dead for so long, and the love to her is still alive. And a constant reminder to you about your loss...Kelly, I love her now. When Julia and Tori were dead I have felt it even stronger."
"Mason, I do not know what to tell you. I do not know how to help you."
"You are already helping me. You are listening to my fantasies, aren't you?" Mason turned his face to his sister and smiled. "I am sorry that I loaded you with my problems. Now to the point, did you want to see me because of any business?"
"Yes... But you what you’ve just told me--"
"And what?"
"Look, father... He wants--"
"What does my father want? Kelly, don't scare me! What are you afraid to tell me?"
"Our father offered you to come over for a rest."
"WHAT? To come over for a rest? Me? Kelly, you were probably confused! It must have been offered to Ted."
"No. He offered this to you. Mason, dad loves you. And he can see how hard everything that happened is for you. Especially because now you have two children. He saw you last week and said that you looked awful."
"If he was raising up twins babies, he wouldn’t have looked better either--" Mason grumbled while cooling down a little.
"Exactly. Mason, he said that he and Sophia would take Sammy and Chip to their home while you go out for a rest. Go somewhere and try to get some fun."
Instead of answering, Mason went to the bedroom and looked on the sleeping babies. On the one hand, he was afraid to part from them. On the other hand... he, in fact, was exhausted.
Kelly approached behind and embraced him from the back.
"Mason, things will only get worse for them, if you’ll get completely exhausted," she whispered. Samantha start moving and Mason pull Kelly back in the living room.
"You might be right... Ok, probably, really I need to have some rest. When should I take the children to our parents?"
"You can them now while they are still sleeping."
"OK.
Packing of things has taken something like a little more than one hour. Thank God, passing the babies went well and after a couple of hours Mason has returned to his apartment.
The place was messy from what happened during the search of the necessary things in the apartment. It seemed to become empty without the children. With a deep sigh Mason has risen from the sofa and come in the direction of the bath. Into the shower and to sleep!
But in this moment in the complete silence of the apartment a very loud phone call was heard. Mason flinched. Who can this be?
He rushed to the telephone, but then he just stunned. And what if... If now he would be informed... He shakes his head. No, all MUST be OK. May be just Sophia wants to tell him that he has forgotten any of the children’s things? Not without a shudder Mason taken the receiver and pressed it to his ear.
"Hello--"
"Mason--"
Not, this is just an obsession! Getting over it Mason forced himself to say: "Kelly, what happened?"
"I am not Kelly, Mason. I am... Mary. Remember me?"
