Chapter 49 — The Kidnapping
"Mason, give me the receiver," Mary asked. "Hello, mum? It's me, Mary. What is happened?"
She has been listened her mother, and then turn away from Mason. Her cheeks flushed.
"Mum, listen me, OK? Christie will be OK. No, I did not get any calls from her. But she probably with Jimmy, who works in the same cafe as she doing. He is her buddy, may be, she stay with him now. No, I do not know his phone number. Mum, go to bed, OK? Christie will return tomorrow, and when she comes back at home we both will speak to her. Yes. Yes, well, I'll beginning to search her tomorrow. OK." She hangs down the receiver; still do not look at Mason.
"What is happened?" he asked, alarmed with her behavior.
"Nothing," she still did not look at him.
"Mary?" he turned her face to himself. She looked at him for a second and then moves away her eyes. "She is drunk," whispered she then.
"And what? Do you worry because she is drunk?"
In Mason's voice was something that forced Mary to overpower shame and look at him. Mason watched seriously and in surprise. She nods.
Mason wanted something say, but then changed his mind and asked Mary: "But what about Christie?"
"She probably stays with her boyfriend."
"But you do not know where she is?"
"No... But I do not think that she is getting in any troubles."
"She is daughter of your father too," Mason slowly said. "And if she will disappear... However, you are right. We need to wait before morning," he finished seeing that Mary turned pale.
"Do you think so?"
"Yes," Mason was not too sure that it's the right decision, but the other side he was not sure that it's wrong one. Searching for Christie now tonight, he did not want. Additionally they have no proofs that she was kidnapped. Christie Duvall never was goody-goody, who comes back at home in 9 o'clock exactly.
"Hope that you are right," Mary with worried look peered into the side of the window as if she could see Christie outside. "Well, we need to wait until morning."

However the morning brought not good news overwise Mason thought. After the call to the house of Mary's mother early in the morning, Mary found out that Theda had not sleep for the whole night and played on nerves of all Christie's friends and buddies, whose phone numbers she only was able to find. Christie nowhere was. She did reach even Jimmy. The guy was surprised and said that he already for two days did not see Christie since duties of each other did not match. Christie was disappeared.
After retold scaring information to Mason, Mary lowly become silent. She did not know where she must search for her younger sister after so wide investigation which was used by Theda.
Mason revolved the news. Now they already have not doubts that Christie's disappearance is connected with the last events his and Mary's lives. But how they will find this stupid girl?
"I am so guilty!" escaped from Mary. "I saw that she is not comforted that she just is afraid! Well why she was not trusted to me!"
"Why you said that Christie was afraid?" it's something new for Mason.
"It seems to me yesterday. I know her enough well, she was behaved with the way as if someone make her powerfully frightened."
"Do you try to talk with her?"
"I tried, but she denied."
"OK, then its possible tries to track the person with whom she met in recently. May be someone saw her with the person, who make her so frightened. But first I need to call to Cruz," Mason draws a sigh. "Supposed I will take Christie to Cruz today--"
"Why?" Mary alarmed. "Why Cruz was wanted to ask her?"
"For several questions."
"You know, all things become so... bounded between it. Christie is frightened by someone, then she disappears, and just in that moment, when you are going to deliver her to Cruz. What is information he wanted to get from her? Possible, someone was wanted that they were stopped before police reached to something? And Christie can be..."
Mary is stopped not wanting to finish her words. She did not want even to think about possibility the worst thing. About that may be Christie already is dead.
"I don't sure," Mason lies. In the light of these events he did not want to tell Mary about the bomb as a new present. "Now I need to go to Cruz (I want to see him against to call him), but you don't go away, OK? If Christie will call to someone, I am sure that she will choose you."
Mary already wanted to object, but then change her mind. She has been understood that she is the single person, who could be trusted by Christie. If she wanted.
