Chapter 52 — The Happening Is Going
It is long time until Mary was able to let out Mason's shirt and look at his face.
"I was so afraid!" she rubbed her cheeks with loomed traces of her tears.
Mason pick up the receiver what already was taken by Chip and Samantha, but it have only short beeps.
"Who it was?" Mason asked already guessing who it was.
"Cruz. He said that you... that you--"
"That my car burst and I was killed," Mason helped. "Understandable."
"But why Cruz said this? What was happened after all?" Mary take away from him, not wanting remember her horror feeling by her for these several minutes.
"He does not know that I am alive. Nobody knows yet."
"What? But why?"
"Mary it seems it is the only way to badger this guy from his sanctum. He wants to see me as a dead man — and his desire will "performed".
"Do not you want to trust even to Cruz?"
"Now yes, I don't want. Afterwards we will think about. Presently our main problem to find your younger sister."
"Mason?" they heard full amazing Cruz's voice and looked over. He stood in doors and stare at Mason.
Mary picks up from the carpet sleeping Chip and takes him to the bed, and then she takes care about Sammi also, having given Mason working out the situation with Cruz.
Men, however, have just talking, but about businesslike than-that deliberated. After tucking Samantha Mary wanted to say men to be out of children room for talking, but Cruz already stood on threshold.
"OK, as we set on." Cruz gesture Mason, nod Mary and quickly left out.
Mary dragged Mason to his bedroom.
"Mason, I need to tell you something!"
"What?" Mason alarmed looked at her.
"Just before Cruz's call here were two more. First came by Christie."
"THANK GOD, she is alive!" escapes from Mason.
"Yes," Mary turned pale and nod. "She is alive, but she is captured in the one house. And she thinks that it did by our father."
"Said she this?" Mason shocked.
"In fact, yes. The truth, she held back until the end but was clear that she want to say."
"Well--" Mason slips in deep thoughts, but then raised his head. "But the second call?"
"It was HIM."
"You are meaning--"
"Yes, our guy."
"The same voice?"
"The same."
"And what he said?"
"He wants me be good," Mary give a shivers. "He said that I don't know full truth, but will hear about in due..."
Mason estimates something.
"But when he called?"
"Just before Christie's call, I talked with her around pair of the minutes, not more, but as soon as I placed the receiver, Cruz's call came."
"OK, think if between Cruz's call and HIS one was around five minutes?" Mason counted.
"Yes, approximately."
"It is interesting... He call right after the blast, but before police's coming. In several minutes, when I am run away. But then he knew that I am alive. On the other hand, he calls and reported that soon you will hear something, right?"
"Yes, it was possible that he meaning this."
"So, he really needs my death... And he wants you be good," Mason make face.
"Do you think that it was my father?" Mary asked. "Yes? Do you think that my father want to kill you?"
Mason avoided looking at her.
"Mason! Look at me!"
He did not move.
Mary got up, come to him and turned his face person to her. "Mason, my father is dead. No matter who is this man, he just pretending to be my father."
Mason's silence was his answer.
Mary returned to her arm chair and sit down. After several depressing minutes she said: "We need to end this whole mess. We need to find Christie and this person."
She got up and goes out to door.
"Where are you?" Mason jumped after her.
"To Theda. I feel that answer must be in our house. Just it cannot be anywhere."
"I do not let you out alone!"
"But you are considered as dead! And if this guy will hear that you are alive the whole your play with Cruz turn dust in ashes."
"I will quietly rest on back sitting and if it is necessary, put on nun's dress, you are not going out alone."
In spite of the whole gravity of the situation, Mary chortle — she visualized Mason nun's dress. This can be better that his looks in priest's dress!
"OK," she finally agreed. "But just no one word from the back sitting!"
