Chapter 97 — The Stunning Blow Of The Truth (1 Part)
"It's just ridiculous!" Mason sniffed and turned to Mary. "Lets go, I want to bring us home as soon as possible. You probably completed exhausted," he anxiously added when he's looking at her pale face.
"No," Larry slowly said. "I think that already it's time to clear all up to the end."
He saw that Mason automatically covered Mary by himself and unexpectedly tenderly said: "Sit down, Golden Boy. And listen to me."
Mary felt how Mason's body shuddered, and sacredly looked up at his face. It's pale, almost grey. Eyes became absolutely black. Mary grabbed him, being afraid that he will lose consciousness now.
"Mason! Mason, are you OK?! Mason, look at me!"
Larry probably noticed Mason's shock too and starts up to them. But Mason already came around.
"It's-s-s im-mpossible," Mason said hardly moving with his lips. "I can not to believe..."
He made two steps, feeling that his knees are weak and almost fallen on the sofa where Mary sat before his arrival. Mary sits down also. She embraced him and nestled, feeling beats of his heart. She was horrified. Everything that seemed being so clear and familiar suddenly scattered into smithereens. She knew that Mason feels the same and afraid of things that she can hear now. But even she hardly wanted to accept it, Larry was right — now they should speak all up to the end. She looked up at Larry. He sighed.
"I think that I should begin from the very beginning. Since that memorable summer when I lost my twin brother."
Mary shuddered. It's the same summer when her father died?
"I think that you, Mary, aware that your father had cancer."
Mary nodded, she knew about it.
"Lung cancer."
"Right. He had delayed his visit to the doctor for long time; your mother almost forced him for making some tests. He was diagnosed and become to get the chemotherapy. We hoped that he'll will survive--" Larry kept silent, but then continued. "And then Kenny began to going out. He's come back in evenings, but didn't say where he was. Under other circumstances I would decide that he had new girl..."
Mary's outraged.
"... But it's not for his condition. I was angry, shouted at him. But he was not saying a word. Finally I am giving up. As his condition became worse. And in one of his "bad" days he said be that he meets with the boy in caves near beaches. That he's talking with the teenager."
"What for?" Mason softly asked. He sat on the sofa, put his elbows on knees and hung down his head. "I never could understand, what for?"
"He hardly told about the reasons. He said that he likes to talk to someone who knows nothing about him. Even his actual age. You see, he could not tell that he's already adult. He did not want to be accused of sexual abuse."
"I see," Mary said and looked at Mason. He nodded, taken away by his own thoughts. "Did Daddy named Mason as "Golden boy"? But why?" she asked.
"Because the boy was with golden heart and in the golden cage."
Mason lifted his head.
"He knew who am I?"
"Probably he knew. I do not know, whence, and he never named me your surname. But I know that he even wanted to go to your father and talk with him about you."
Mason strained and then shook his head.
"He never made it."
"No. I think that he just not get enough time. He passed some cycles of chemo and has lived until the autumn. And then suddenly all come to the end. He already finished the fourth cycle, his condition even become a little improved... He felt badly just in the street, near our house. Ambulance taken him to the hospital where he died in the morning of next day. I wanted to be with him to the end. But he forced me to promise that I will go to this dammed cave and tell his Golden Boy that he cannot come to their meeting.
Mason looked up at him with defenseless sight.
"You did not come."
"Of course, I did. But, naturally, I was late. And when I did return to the hospital my twin brother already was without consciousness and did not come around until his death. And I began to hate "Golden boy" who not allowed me even to say goodbye to my twin."
