Chapter 98 — Reunited
Mason and Mary leave out though the estate gate and stopped. Mary turns and looks up at Mason. He seems pale and exhausted, but enough calm. Unexpectedly for herself Mary starts to sob. Mason pulls her closer and embraces, feeling as she's trembling under his hands.
"All right, all right," he said after a few moments and torn her off his shirt. "It's over. We'll be fine."
"I just cannot believe--" she began to search for a handkerchief.
"That everything was ended?"
"That's it. And more. That we found out... Who are we--" You...
Mary had Mason's hand in her hand in and felt as strongly he shuddered. She looks up at Mason, but he moved away his sight. Mary flushed.
"I am sorry--" she murmured.
Mason sharply surprised turned his head to her and raised her face by the chin.
"For what?"
"I told my uncle about Chris Rock. I saw that you did hurt to found out it. I am so guilty--"
"Mary, Mary... It's nothing about you. If you did not tell it to your uncle, we'd never learn all of story until now."
"That's it! And you'd not pass through all. All of us."
Mason sighs. "I'm not saying that it comes easily to me. And my mind still is confused. But I firmly convinced that we'd really need to know the truth. It was necessary for all of us. Therefore you are nothing to blame... Unless--"
"What?"
"Unless that you have the last month of pregnancy and do not want to be at home, investigating in not the most safe places and not with the most safe people."
"I should not investigate if my husband was not kidnapped. I'd need to bring him back," Mary importantly replied. She finally becomes come around. "And I found you!"
"Not absolutely, but it's already unimportant," Mason hemmed.
"Quite right. The only important thing that we're really need to come back home."
Mason takes the handle door Mary's car but was stopped.
"I'll drive for good. You're too much passed for last days."
"You too. All right, then let's walk to the closest phone booth and call for taxi. I think that we really need for some fresh air. We'll take my car later.
Joining their palms they slowly started wandering along the street to the phone booth. Mason feels cool night air and tried to understand what's just happened. Everything seemed strange unreal, it's was difficult to him to accept that his Chris was Mary's father. How he could be adult... And he never returns. Its hit Mason so much that he even brought down his steps, suddenly completely realized it. Chris is gone. He's died. For long time ago. They never meet again. Mason shakes his head, forced his grief go in the deep when it's ready to overwhelm him. Not now. Sometimes later... And now actually he should combine his friend of childhood with the man who was told by Larry.
"Mason--" his thoughts were interrupted low Mary's voice.
"What?" Mason strongly pressed her fingers in his palm and stopped.
"Mason, how we'll live now?
Mason suddenly had his heart in his boots.
"What do you mean?" His own voice seemed be strange even himself.
"Mason, what is wrong? Do you feel hurt? You're deadly pale."
"What — you — mean?"
"Well... All that we just knew. I cannot get used to the way that we found out be so... connected."
"It's unpleasant for you?" Mason forced himself to look at her face.
"No, of course. Just it's a kind of strange. You... you became like almost my relative.
Mason feels that something inside spread warmly.
"Fortunately we are not relatives," informed he at last starting to find his balance. "Overwise we could not get married."
"You talk like a lawyer," blamed Mary.
"I'm actually the lawyer. All right, let's give the call. Or they'll search for both of us."
"May be they already did," Mary added, and they walk to the booth.
However they did a few steps and nearby the car stops. Mason automatically blocked Mary by himself. The driver opens the car window and made inviting gesture: "The master said me to drive you back home."
"Well, you'll be better to leave us alone--" Mason begins, but he was interrupted by Mary: "Mason, I saw this man in my uncle's mansion. Who sent you to follow us?" The question was naturally is addressed already to the driver."
"Mr. Duvall sent," the man willingly agreed. Mason searchingly looked at Mary. "May be we should take advantage of his help?"
"You are crazy!"
"No, just try be pragmatic. You are really need to get a rest and as soon as possible. And when we'll finally see a taxi, there already will come morning. Besides after our conversation it seems to me as improbable that your uncle wished to kidnap us."
Mary should agree that Mason's words have some reasons.
"All right," she finally agreed. "Though firstly we really need to make the call home. Everyone certainly worried for us."
"It seems to me that no need to waste our time. Besides I do not think that you should listen by phone indignant cries of our relatives. We'll nave the full set of impressions when we will face them."
"Probably you are right," Mary reluctantly agreed and climbed in the back sitting of the car. Mason sat down nearby and closed the door. The car got off with speeding up and rushed away in nightly Santa Barbara.
Mary put her head down on Mason's shoulder and watches though her eyelashes at the night city. Mason cautiously pulled out his hand and embraced her upper body. Mary looks up and timidly smiled. He smiled back and promised to himself that they will not separate any more. Never.
