Great Thanks to Clarisse McClellan!

The meeting in the police station
Police station. Cruz is going through his paperwork. Mary enters his office.

Mary: Excuse me.
Cruz: Yes, Sister.
Mary: I'm looking for my step brother Steve Bassett.
Cruz: I haven't seen him this afternoon. You might check in the courthouse.
(Short pause.)
Mary: Why didn't you arrest Ted Capwell at the restaurant?
Cruz: OK. I was the one who got punched, I figured it was up to me to decide whether I wanted to make a fuss about it.
Mary: Well, the terms of his bail are that he stay away from my sister...
Cruz (stands up): You know, it was a public place and aaa... chance meetings do happen.
Mary: That was no chance meeting.
Cruz: Possibly not, but then again no harm was done after all, except for MY jaw.
Mason enters the office.
Mary: Is it true that you were engaged to Ted's sister?
Cruz (smiles ironically): May be you wanna ask one of these other officers to help you?
Mary: May be one of these other officers should be investigating my sister's case?! You don't believe Ted's guilty, do you?
Cruz: The case is still open. We're looking for other suspects.
Mary: Why? You mean Christie is a liar? Or is it that she's new in town and that Ted is from one of the founding families?
Cruz: Neither that nor my personal feeling has any bearing on this investigation.
Mary: Oh, common, inspector! What do you take me for?
Cruz: A lady who is very upset. Whose sister has been badly hurt. And who I am not going to give the chance to say anything else you might regret. If you will excuse me.

Cruz leaves the office. Mary starts to fiddle nervously with her cross. The chain brakes and Mary's cross falls on the floor. This shocks Mary. Mason picks up her cross and hands it back to Mary.

Mason: Did you drop something?
Mary: It's broken...
Mason: Shouldn't be too hard to fix?
Mary: I've had this on since the day I took my vows.
Mason: May be we'd better sit down for a minute.
Mason pulls up a chair. Mary sits down.
Mary: I don't know what's wrong with me...
Mason: Cruz handles a lot of people. Most of them do not have the nerve to talk back.
Mary: You were listening?
Mason: Well, you weren't exactly talking in whispers.
Mason leans over Mary.
Mason: Mary, you're wrong if you think Cruz is bent on protecting the Capwells. He's been a lot worse by our family than he has by yours.
Mary: I have to go.
Mary stands up. Mason's in her way.
Mason: Can I drive you somewhere?
Mary: No. Thank you. I... I... I'm picking Christie up from Jade Perkins's house... God, she has one friend in this town... Good bye.
Mary leaves. Mason's puzzled.
Mason: Jade?.. She is Ted's friend.
Cruz returns.
Mason: Hello, Cruz. Thanks, amigo!
Cruz: For what?!
Mason: For being "the guy in the blackheads" so I could be "the cavalry to the rescue".
Mason leaves the office.

Ted's efforts to make Christie to say the truth about the rape
Jade Perkins's house. Christie tries to flee. Ted catches her by the waist in the doorway.

Ted: Stop. Just listen to me! All right? I just wanted you to promise me something, OK? I just want you to...
Mary storms in and grabs Ted's arm.
Mary (wails): Don't you ever touch her again!!!
Ted: We're just talking...
Mary: Never!
Ted: We're just talking...
Mary: Christie! Are you all right?! Did he hurt you?!
Christie: No, I'm fine. Let's just go. Please!..
Mary: The police will put a stop to this.
Mary rushes to the telephone.
Ted: Look, Mary! Mary... You could ask Christie, I was just talking to her...
Mary (yells):Oh, yeah! You have her so terrified she'll tell me anything you want her to! Which is one more reason to have you put in jail!
Mary picks up the receiver. Mason enters Jade's house.
Mary: Operator! Give me the police!
Mason presses down the lever.
Mason: Hang up the phone!
(Pause.)
Mary: I am turning him in and having his bail revoked! That's what I am doing! He's... he's not supposed to be anywhere near her! And this... this is not the first time! And it's not even the second time!..
Mason: And what harm has been done?
Mason and Mary stare at each other.
Mary: Are you crazy?! He raped my sister!!!
Mason: That remains to be seen!
Mary: And then I come in here... I find him holding on to her as she is struggling to get away and he's threatening her with all kinds of...
Ted (yells): I've never threatened her!
Mary: Oh! I've heard you! 'Think about what I told you!' isn't it what you said? And just what was it you said just before I got here?
Mason: Mary! I don't understand the rage! The girl is obviously unharmed.
Mary (indignantly): He broke the law! Again!!! Does that make any difference to anyone here except for me? I mean, could people in this town go around harassing and assaulting people as long as it's someone you know?
Mason: Whether Ted is guilty or not, there's still room for doubt, isn't there? What about compassion? What about mercy? For somebody who's dedicated their life to Christ, you certainly don't put much faith in his example!
Mary: Anger has its place in this life too! Anger for injustice and... and... and cruelty has its own seething grace!
Mason: And who are you to decide what's just and what's unjust? I don't see Christie screaming at the top of her lungs! Christie, do you wanna get on the phone, call the police, have Ted sent back to jail?
Christie:I just wanna get out of here and go home.
Mary: Well, of course, she's frightened. She's been intimidated. She's been held prisoner here.
Mason: Whose prisoner, Mary? She wants to leave and you won't let her. Who appointed you anyone's savior, anyway? Not Christie! When she needed you, you weren't there! You ran off to hide in the convent, left her with a drunken mother, a step father who beat her, step brother whose temper is famous all over the state! If you're trying to make up for that now, show yourself a little mercy and give it up. It's too late! She doesn't need a fire-breathing guardian angel to look after her anymore.
Shocked Mary stares at Mason, then picks up the phone and calls the police.
* * *

Mason: Mary, don't call the police. Ted only wanted to talk to Christie.
Mary: He is violent.
Mason presses down the lever.
Mary (yells): Get you hand away from that phone!
Mason: Now he just wants... wants... would you look at Ted... Really look at him and tell me what you see!
Mary: All right, I'll tell you what I see! I see a willful, unprincipled, violent man!
Mason: It's not my brother you're describing.
Mary: I'm describing the man who raped my sister. And he's still got the scratch marks on his face from when she struggled.
Mason: The truth will come out in court. But no harm has been done here today.
Mary: No harm? Look at her! Look at the state she is in! He's got to be locked away!
Mason: Mary...
Mary (yells hysterically when Mason touches her trying to stop her): Don't touch me!!! Leave me alone!!!
Mason (shocked): You're trembling. You really think I'd hurt you, Mary?
Mary: Stay away from me... (then carries on yelling) ...and you (to Ted) stay away from my sister!!!
Mary calls Steve's office.
Mary: Yes, can I speak to Steve Bassett, please? He's in the district attorney's office. It's urgent. It's his sister calling. It's Mary.
Mason: Ted. Ted, where are you going?
Ted: Look, Mason, thanks for trying but I'm not hanging around here, waiting to go to jail, man.
Mason grabs Ted by the arm.
Mason: Ted, don't leave. You'll only make things worse.
Ted (frees himself from Mason): What could be worse than to go to jail for something I didn't do!
Ted runs away.
Mason (yells): Ted! Come back!!!
A few seconds later.
Mary (speaks on the phone): Steve, you said next time something like this happened you'd have him arrested. Well, you have to do that now. You have to find him and you have to put him away so that he can't get near Christie again... All right, we'll wait here for you until you call. But hurry!
Mary puts down the receiver and hugs Christie.
Mason: It must have been Jack the Ripper you were siccing your brother on, not Ted Capwell. Probably got the posse 'round at the dept already.
The phone rings. Mason picks it up.
Mason: Hello.
It's Gina.
Gina: Mason? It's Gina. I'm glad I found you. I was calling everywhere.
Mason: Well, what... what is it, Gina? What's the matter?
Gina: I'm being kicked out of the treatment centre.
Mason: Oh, Gina, what did you do?
Gina: I got well, Mason. I'm being released. Today, right now. I'm cured I can walk out of here and go home.
Mason: Well, con... congratulations. That's wonderful.
Gina: The doctor said ahh... he never had a patient that worked as hard as I did.
Mason: Aaa... Gina... Listen... I'm sorry, but I can't really talk right now. I'm in the middle of something here.
Gina: Oh, mmm... Well, you see... you are the only person I called... I... I wanted you to be the first to know...
Mason: I... I would've known... I'm... I'm glad you called. I'm very proud of you. You... do you want me to come and... mm... pick you up, take you home?
Gina: Ahh... Yes, if you have the time.
Mason: Of course, I do. A few minutes..
Gina: All right. I'll... I'll be there when... when you come.
Mason: Got it... aaa... It won't be long. Bye.
Puts down the receiver.
Mary: Mason, I think it would be a good idea if you were to leave now. And if I were you I would find Ted and persuade him to turn himself in.
Mason (recites ironically): Sister Mary, Quite contrary... If you were me you wouldn't be so self-righteous about ruining another human being's life...
Mary (interrupts him): Oh, the way your brother tried to ruin my sister's?..
Mason: You might have developed a... a sense of compassion during a lifetime of being buffeted at, about a modicum of humility...
Mary: Fine! When he admits what he did!
Mason: Mary, don't you have any qualms at all about your desire for vengeance? Do you have any second thoughts that possibly, just possibly, you might be sending an innocent man to jail?
Mary: I'm not sending anyone to jail. The jury will do that.
Mason: And what about the call to your brother to hunt Ted down and have him locked up?!
Mary (yells): What?.. Ted was warned to stay away from Christie when he was released on bail.
Mason: As misguided as he is, he's only trying to find out why he is being accused of a crime he didn't commit.
Mary: People like you and your brother disgust me!
Mason (stares at her): You know, Mary... One day you're going to come to Ted and beg his forgiveness for dragging him through all this.
Mary: No. The only person whose forgiveness I will ask is my sister's... for not protecting her somehow from that monster! He is the most hateful, despicable human being I've ever known! (starts screaming at the top of her voice) I hate him!!! And I hope he rots in jail for the rest of his life!
Mason (stares at her, then after a short pause adds): You know, I think you've missed your calling, Sister of Mercy. You don't belong in the convent, ...you belong in a lynch mob.
Mason leaves. Mary is lost for words.

* * *

Mary and Christie are in Jade Perkins's house.
Mary hears voices in her head.
"Some day you're going to come to Ted and beg his forgiveness... You and your brother disgust me! ...disgust me... ...a crime he didn't commit... ...didn't commit... He is the most hateful, despicable human being I've ever known... I hate him!!! ...hate him!!! ...You don't belong in a convent, you belong in a lynch mob!.. a lynch mob... a lynch mob... a lynch..."
Christie enters the room
Christie: Mary! What's wrong?
Mary: I don't know. I don't understand.
Christie: What? What's the matter?
Mary: Oh, Christie, I am so scared of my own feelings. Of my anger. I... I've never felt anything like this before. Now I look at Ted... I wanna attack him with my own hands. I want him dead!!!
Having picked up Gina from the treatment centre Mason returns to Jade's house.
Mason: You can relax, ladies. It's only me.
Mary: I don't believe they haven't found him yet!
Mason: Well, I'm afraid it's just a matter of time. Why don't you two go home and wait.
Mary: Because Steve told us to wait here until he calls. And that's what we're going to do.
Mason: Well, suit yourself. I've already phoned every place I thought he might be.
Mary: Oh, you can't convince me that you wanna find him.
Mason (yells): Of course, I wanna find him! He's only hurting himself by running away. (Short pause) Sorry. I didn't realize how much this is affecting me. And I'm sorry... I'm sorry about what I said before about the lynch mob. I realize that you believe that Ted is guilty. Based on the evidence that's not an unreasonable assumption. But I have to try to convey to you why I can't believe for a second that Ted is guilty of what he's been accused of. You see... Ted was the youngest in the family and I was the oldest. So I always sort of... looked after him. You know... it wasn't until recently that I realized that he's been looking after me too... All of us... really... He... worried about us, intervened in our disputes, loved us... never asked anything in return, except that we try to love each other. And then when... when he fell in love with the girl... with Leiken... he was as committed to her as he had been to all of us... My brother... is...an extraordinary human being. He is... the most gentle, the most loyal, the kindest human being I have ever known. I've never respected and admired anyone as much as I do him. Now I tell you this so that may be you'll understand my overreaction to your hostility toward him. I apologise for that. But not for my belief in my brother's innocence.

In the hospital
Mary: Mason, has your brother been arrested yet?
Mason: No. I just talked to Cruz. He's still looking for him. Have you come all the way down here to ask me that?
Mary: No. I brought Christie in for a check up. You should know that she was so savagely assaulted that it's gonna take weeks to recover. Physically that is, psychologically it's gonna take a lot longer.
Mason: I am sorry.
Mary: "Sorry" isn't what I want from you. I think you're hiding Ted and I want you to give him up.
(Doctor talks to CC.)
Mary: Look, you may think you're getting away with something, but if you really are protecting Ted, you're in serious trouble.
Mason: I assure you no one is 'protecting' him.
Mary: Frankly, I think that the fact that he ran off like that is a further proof of his guilt. And I'm told we can use it against him.
