Chapter 1 — Terrible News
It was July 1987. Mason sat at a table in his apartment and wrote something. However no matter how hard he tried to concentrate he got nothing as a result. He constantly had looked back to the door of the bedroom in which Chip slept. Today he was with his son tete-a-tete. He persuaded Victoria to go out for the weekend and now he reaped the fruits. Chip’s behavior was usual for any 5 months old baby — the crying of half the day and sleeping of the other half. Mason nearly went crazy from the first half "a joy of parenthood" and was really glad that the second half began at last. But even now he couldn’t manage to think about the work.
Got tired from his fruitless attempts he's up and tiptoed to the bedroom. Chip slept peacefully in his cradle. "Thank God," Mason thought and his baby begin to stir. Mason quickly returns back in the living room.
He thought what he's better to make first — to finish the contract or have a rest as suddenly he heard the phone call.
Mason ran and quickly grabbed the phone's receiver, not wishing to wake up Chip again.
"Mason Capwell."
"It's Officer Black, Police Department. Is Victoria Capwell your wife?"
"Yes," Mason felt a nasty feeling deep in his stomach. "What's happened?"
"I’m afraid that I have bad news for you, Mr. Capwell. Your wife was involved in the car accident."
"My God! Is she seriously injured?
Phone fell silent, and then the officer said: "Your wife is dead, Mr. Capwell."
He said something else but Mason did not hear him anymore. He dropped the receiver on the floor and absently looked around the room. Tori was gone? In the same moment Chip began to cry desperately. Mason rushed in the bedroom and got his son on his hands.
"My God, what I suppose to do now?"
