Chapter 14 — Return To Past
Mason Capwell’s car approached the building apartment. Mason switched off the engine and looked at Mary.
"We are here. Shall we?"
"Don’t you need...?
Mason smiled.
"I’ve already taken care of everything. Do you really have any doubts?"
Mary looked stunned at Mason for a few moments and then laughed.
"I should have guessed that you’d provide all. The trickster! And when did you get the time to do this?"
"I did. Let's go. To the real world, which we meet fully armed!"
They stopped at seeing the familiar door with number 412. Mason unlocked it with his key and let Mary in.
Mary walked into the living room and looked around. Everything changed since she was here in the last time. It didn’t surprise her, but she felt some sadness.
Mason threw the keys on the little table and went to her.
"Mary? Are you OK?"
"Yes, of course. I was just deep in my thoughts."
"Come on, I want to show you something."
Mason took her by her hand and led her into the bedroom. There was a bulb light there, but Mason didn’t turn on the light. He led Mary to the corner and there opened a door. Mary was surprised; she did not remember that there was another door in the apartment. Passing through the door, she stopped in complete amazement.
The door in the wall of the bedroom led to the past. Or if to be more accurate it led to the next apartment, which was a copy of the apartment of Mason now and pretty much look-alike his apartment before Mary’s death.
Mason look at her with worry in his face, regretting that he didn’t warn her about what she will see.
"Mary?"
"М-Mason," she says at last. "How did you make all this?"
"Mary, I am sorry! I didn’t want you to be frightened! I purchased this apartment shortly before our separation. I thought that my old one would be too crowded for us," he smiled sadly. "After what happened. Coming here was hurtful for me, and I locked it. When I found you, I thought that it would be just ideal for you, because, now it’s better for you that no one will see you."
"It is incredible! Everything here is as pretty just as it was before."
"Well, not absolutely," Mason smiled. "There is no dust, and it contains new things. Do you like it?"
"Very! Only--"
"What only?"
"Only it also reminds me of how it was before."
Mason lowered his head.
"You can do here what ever you like. Only tell me what needs to be changed and I will do it."
"Mason, I do not want anything to change!" Mary turned to him, her eyes shining. "Just this is real life," she became serious. "And I should get used to this again."
