Chapter 20 — Old New Guests
"Mason!" Mary's voice became demanding, and Mason woke from his thoughts.
"Yes, I am here, Mary. Were you saying something?"
"Mason, are those the papers that Mark is looking for?" she repeated her question.
"Aha."
"And what are they about?"
"It is not very important," Mason lied. "Mary... Mark came here yesterday."
"What?" Mary became livid. "He came for me?"
"No. He came for the settlement."
"For... what... the... settlement?" Mary’s face became even greyer because of her fear.
"Don’t be so frightened!" Mason quickly approached and embraced her. "He offered to give you a divorce in exchange on these papers. It’s all he asked for."
"Only that?"
"Yes. Why, what did you think?"
"Me... nothing. What did you answer him?"
"I agreed. We will go to Las Vegas today and get your divorce, and then I will give him these papers which he wants to receive so much."
"Do I have to see him?"
"Yes, but I will be with you all time. Don’t be afraid, he can’t hurt you. Not in front of all of us."
"And the children? Would they be safe, if we will leave together?"
"Children?" Mason suddenly remembered about them but he quickly recovered. "I will send them to CC again. Capwell's house has the reliable guards."
"And how you’ll explain?"
"Somehow...
In this moment they were distributed by bell door. Mason and Mary were both alarmed, as if they were two thieves, who were caught on their robbery.
"Go to your place," Mason whispered, and after making sure that the living room has no trace of Mary’s being there, he went to the door.
"Who is it?" he asked, without unlocking door.
"It’s me. Mason, it is Kelly," he heard the very surprised voice of his sister. "Mason, why you are hiding?"
Mason felt simultaneously both relieved and worried. It was good that it wasn’t Mark like he thought, and only his sister, but it would still be difficult to get rid of her.
He opened the door and with a nod invited her to come in.
"Kelly, what happened?"
"Nothing. I just wanted to visit you. You are acting very strange recently."
"Am I?" Mason furtively looked at the clock. He needed to get rid of Kelly as soon as possible otherwise they can’t go to deal with their doubtful case.
"Yes, you are. You have a very strange behavior. The car is blown. You don’t answer your phone. Isn’t that enough?"
"I don't answer my phone calls?" Mason was amazed and went to check the phone. The plug was out the socket. "I just didn't notice," he guilty looked at his sister.
"Do you want to tell me that all these things are accidents?"
"Sure, they are."
"It seems to me that you need help. Mason, do you hear me?
Mason stood for nearly a minute with an absent expression of his face, making a decision, and then he smiled and called loudly. "Mary, can you come here, please."
"What?" Kelly's face didn’t reflect even the slightest surprise because Mason’s words seemed like a joke to her.
But suddenly she saw Mary, who left the bedroom and timidly looked at her.
"Mary?" It was just a sigh, even not a word.
"Yes, it’s me. Hi, Kelly."
"Kelly, I have no time for explanations. We are leaving now."
"To where? Mason! What is happening?" Kelly caught her brother by his sleeve.
"I will explain later. But I need someone to take care of Chip and Samantha. Can you take them to father's house?"
"Я... Yes, I will take them their, if you want. But where do you go?"
"To Las Vegas. We will stay there until tomorrow top. And now I am sorry, but I need make a call." Mason went into the bedroom and closed the door. From there he called Mark and informed him about the place of their meeting. And then he took again those hateful papers and with a sigh looked at them. The best would be to destroy them, but he could not do it. He had no right. He put the papers back to his pocket and returned to the living room.
Mary and Kelly were talking but they stopped at once as they saw him getting in.
"We need to go out," Mason dryly said. "Kelly, take children and save them as your own. I want be sure that they are in complete safety."
"OK, I will. You can go, but I must to call for a taxi. I don’t want to drive babies."
Mason hesitated, but then nodded. "Be cautious," he told to Kelly as a farewell and together with Mary he left to the street.
They had a difficult trip in front of them.
