Chapter 73 — Reunion
"I did not live in California," Larry sighed. "And I could not return... Until recently."
"Your dirty affairs, right? How many years behind bars you got? Five, ten?"
"Theda told you it? She's--"
"Just try to tell muck about my mother! No many times for resuming that that you were mixed up in crime."
"You hasten with conclusions. No, I was not imprisoned. I was not behind bars even a few months. However, I had the risk of it. And consequently, I would need to go away."
"It is means that for your crimes there are passed a limitation period," Mary nodded, realizing.
"I was substituted! I did not anything illegal," Larry rejected.
"All criminals speak like this," Mary replied.
"So, you're denying what may condemn the innocent? And Ted Capwell?
Mary shuddered.
"Ted was not condemned," she told.
"Thanks Christie, who was cleared him. In addition, you with Theda blamed him until the moment when the truths come out."
"I can see that you were fine educated lately. All of newspapers read by you yet? Yes, I did the mistake. And Christie did. However, its cause was not hasty decisions. In addition, on your place I would not remember this story. Because if then you helped us as you promised to my father, that probably nothing is happened. Nevertheless, what to sense to speak about it now?"
"I'm talk about the same thing! I want to compensate my absence all of yours!"
Mary sadly looked at him.
"The time cannot be turned back. That is done — that is done. It is impossible to return in many years and pretend that nothing happened. How it would be desirable. "Mary become silent and then with exasperation added: "Also, it's impossible to alter lives of other people how you would like! And furthermore to decide to whom to live and whom to die. You perfectly understood that only the death could separate Mason and me."
"I understood that you are simply afflicted with him," Larry grumbled, accepting that words of his niece have some sense.
"I want to know something," Mary told. "Why you informed nobody what I am live? Even mom and Christie? You ordered Mark to hold me in Mexico?"
"I did not order your husband. Your former husband," Larry recovered under Mary's menacing sight. "The only thing that I have made — I arranged that he be hired as doctor in the clinic. However, I also could not think that he is such geek. Your mother... I thought that Mark would inform them. And I'm even not suspecting that he did not this."
"And my funeral? For what was made all this representation?"
"At that moment it was not clear yet, whether your brain has suffered. You could stay in a coma forever--"
"And in this case, my body under devices eternally would be in the clinic--" Mary distorted. "Ok, it is already unimportant. Uncle Larry... You will achieve nothing if you'll pursue us. Time left. You cannot fulfill the promise, which you have given to your brother. Leave it. I want to live with a normal life. To give birth to my baby, to love Mason, to be happy... I do not wish to live in fear that you can destroy its entire. Please, leave your attempts to separate Mason and me."
"You suggest me to look how you ruining your life, and do nothing?"
"I suggest allowing to me to decide how I want to live. You lived all these years being afraid of prosecution. Do you really want the same destiny for me?"
Larry was silent so long that it seemed he would not answer after all.
"Fine," he said at last. "I'll not interfere. For some time. However, do not ask me to stop cares about you and try to protect you."
"From Mason?" Mary's voice again dangerously rung out, it has was so weird for her — that her uncle assurance that all harm goes from Mason.
"Mary?" Mason fast steps to her and embraced, thrown the angered sight aside Larry.
"I am all right. Come home," Mary took his hand and turned to leave. "Remember that you promised me," she told Larry, and go with Mason to their house.
As soon as they left square, Mason got mad.
"Why do you leave out with him? You know how it's dangerous!"
"I wanted to talk to him; I wanted that he finally understood that we should be left alone. And partially I did it," Mary reconciliatory told. "Besides, he can harm me never--"
"You want to tell that he promised to you not rearrange our life?" Mason was full of skepticism.
"No. He promised only don't interfere. But he told that he would observe of us..."
Mason moaned.
"Did he explain why he makes it?"
"He says that he promised to my father before his death to cares of Christie and me. And he disappeared from justice all this time... What are relatives I have!" Mary guilty looked at Mason.
"Mine it is not too better," Mason smiled and embraced her for shoulders. "Do you trust him?"
"I want to trust... And yes, probably, I believe that sometime he will not interfere. We have the pause and should take advantage of it, I guess?"
"You are right. Perhaps then he nevertheless will understand that I love you instead of I am threat."
"It is too good to be the truth. But you never can tell?
They entered into the house and risen on the floor. In the apartment, there were only Christie and Jimmy, who shown to owners the work done with shine, and run away as soon as possibility was presented.
"We are alone finally," Mason mistrustfully stretched. "I don't believe."
"Not absolutely," Mary crafty nodded towards the nursery altered from Mason's cabinet. "Christie told that he put Chip to sleep already for long time, so alone we will be not so for long time."
"He will not get out of the bed and not die with hunger," Mason objected. "And we have the refuge," he gestured to the door between apartments, both of two was his own now. "We'll go?"
"I just look how they are," Mary disappeared in the nursery, and Mason pulled out the nonalcoholic champagne from the refrigerator, put it in the bucket with ice that together with the box of chocolates he dragged in the second living room.
Mary came back after ten minutes but when she appeared, Mason any more did not regret that she is late. The world for both of them ceased to exist...
