Together and Forever

Chapter 9 — On the Way

Mary has been pacing nervously in the cabin wring her fingers. When will he come! And what if Mark got to him ... No! She’s bitten her lip and forbid herself to even think about what can happen to Mason if Mark will catch him... She will never forgive herself, if something will happen to Mason. It would only be her fault!
In this moment when all of her doubts and fears dispelled, she heard fast steps on the deck and a very familiar voice start talking with a guard of the marina. "Thank God" Mary said aloud. But she did not dare to come to the deck. However in less than two minutes, Mason went down the narrow ladder into the cabin.
Mary hugged him on his neck.
"Mary!" Mason hugged her back. "I’ve already told you that you are safe now--"
"I know. But I’m still afraid--"
"Let’s go up the deck. Very soon we’ll sail away and then you can stop being so afraid."
Holding Mary by her fingers, Mason led her to the deck. A few manipulations with the anchor and the mooring lines and the yacht start to rock on the waves. Mason come to the deck-cabin and started leading the yacht away from the shore.
Mary felt a huge relief, looking hatefully on the shores of Santa Catalina as moving away. Is all this horror really behind her?! Mary's eyes wandered to the far side of the marina for the last time... And suddenly she felt a chill of horror crossing her body from top to bottom. She saw Mark's car getting nearer!
Not now! How did he manage to catch up with them so quickly?!
"Who?" she heard Mason’s voice. She probably spoke aloud the last phrase.
"Mark--" Mary felt her teeth chattering. "Mark... He is there--"
"He will not catch up with us," Mason said in sure voice, hugging her. "And he doesn’t even have any chance to race us. I’ve taken care of that."
"How?" Mary moved away and looked at him surprised.
"Like that!" Mason smiled and rubbed his forefinger with his thumb.
Mary understood that he bribed the guards of the pier to make sure Mark could hire neither a boat nor a yacht. She smiled.
"You are still the same... trickster."
"I’m ready to do much more in order to see you alive and smiling ... Lets come down, Mary. The yacht is on the automatic driver and it brings us directly to where we should go. I want to finally get a look on you--"
"Let's go," Mary turned her head so that Mason wouldn’t see her tears. What will he think if he would look...?
They came down back to the cabin. Mason arranged a comfortable place on the sofa for Mary and covered her with a plaid. Then he sat beside her on the same sofa.
"Mary... I still don't believe that you are alive... Tell me how could it happen? It seemed I didn't make everything I could to rescue you--"
