Mary: Hey you, Mark. Mark: This is where you live? Mary: This is it. Common in. Mark: Oh, Mary… wow… I have to admit you're doing very well for yourself. Mary: Well, I mean… I don't exactly own the place. I… I'm Mr Capwell's nurse. But I can play hostess and ask you to come in. Mark: Ooh, thank you. Oh, my gosh! This is beautiful. Mary: Isn't it great? Hey, listen, I don't have to be at the clinic till late this afternoon. So, how about if I take you sightseeing in Santa Barbara? Mark: I'd love it. How about I take you to lunch? Mary: Oh, no. I owe you lunch, remember? Mark: Right. So when can we go? Mary: Right now. Mark: Great. Let's go Mary: Right. Mason: Mary! If you got a few… (notices Mark) Oh, I… I didn't know you had company. Hello. Mark: Hello. Mary: This is ahm… Mason Capwell. Dr Mark McCormick. Mason: Well, doctor, how do you do? (to Mary) Aren't you feeling well? Mary: I feel fine Mason. Mark and I grew up together. We are… old friends. The frill float days… Mark: Yeah… Mason: Ohh… so the infamous Sarsaparilla float I got blamed for came from you, hah? Mark: Oh… did you get blamed? Mason: Well, accused is more like it. Mary… ahm… if… I need to talk to you for a few minutes. How… how long are you gonna be tied up? Mary: Almost for the day. Mark and I are on our way out and I then I have to go to the clinic. Mason: Well, can you give me a few minutes before you go? Mary: No, sorry Mason. We have plans. Mark: Oh, now, if it's important Mary, the sightseeing can wait. Mason: Ooh… sightseeing… ahm… that was so urgent. Mary: Mason, I'm sure that whatever you have to say to me, you can say to me tomorrow. Mason: What makes you so sure? Mary: You know, when you want something, everyone else can just wait, can't they? Mason: I don't think I'm like that at all. (to Mark) She can be very unkind. Mark: Can she? Mary: Only to him. And only because he deserves it. Mason: Ooh, I think you're still upset about giving me that information yesterday. Mary: Mason! I didn't give you that information, you deceived me and tricked it out of me. Mason: And if I do an act of contrition, will you forgive me? Mary: You know, that's what it would be with you. An “act”. Mason: Not only unkind but cruel too. Mary: Look, I'm ready to go. (leaves the room) Mark: Oh, look, I'm sorry about that. But you know… no one's ever been able to tell Mary to do something she didn't want to. Mason: Oh, you're so right. Mark: Yeah, well, nice to meet you. (They shake hands.) Hope to see you again. Mason: Oh, yes. Mary and Mark return to the Capwell's mansion. In the doorway they nearly bump into Kirk Cranston. Mark: I can't [believe] how beautiful Santa Barbara is. Mary opens one of the boxes and wants to have a good look at her purchase. She is interrupted by Mason. Mason: Back so soon? Mary goes upstairs. Mason seems quite happy with the outcome of their conversation. |
Mason: Hello Mary. Mary: Gina, Brandon said you wanted to see me. Gina: Yes, I want you upstairs with my husband, not downstairs in the kitchen. Mason: Now, wait a minute. Mary: Gina, I'm not on duty right now. Ms Nealy is. Gina: Oh… Well, where is she? Mary: Upstairs. Gina: Well, at least she knows how to do her job. Mason: Gina, Mary saved Dad's life. Have you been bothered to thank her for that? Mary: Mason… Gina: Well, I am very grateful but the fact is… she wouldn't have to do anything if she was upstairs with him, instead of being downstairs with you. Mary: Gina, how in the world was I supposed to know that someone would make an attempt on… Gina: Well, you should've been up there anyway. I mean he could've had a heart attack, the equipment could've failed. Mary: Look! It was my night off. I was called back here from a social engagement. Gina: Oh, that's what you call it? Mary: I… I… I had company – yes, but I was checking on him regularly... Gina: Well, that wasn't good enough now, was it? Or may be you just got pulled into Mason's scheme. Did you ever think about that? Mary: What? Mason: I'll handle this Mary. Gina: May be Mason lured you downstairs into the study and he kept you there, so he could sneak upstairs into CC's room… Mason: Gina… Mary: How dare you? Gina: Well, he just accused me of the same thing two minutes ago. Mason: I did no such thing. Gina: Yes, you did. Anyway, Mary you don't know what's going on here. CC and Mason just hate each other. Mary: Look. I'm not too happy with Mason myself right now. But I think I understand him well enough to know that… that no matter what he's done, he never wanted his father dead. Gina: Oh, really? So you know Mason better than I do? And than his family does? Mason: You're not family. Mary: Oh, better than you do obviously. (goes upstairs) Gina: Mason… Only a woman who's very sure of a man would talk like that. Are you in love with her? Have you slept with her? Mason: Oh, stop it! Gina: Common Mason! You know you could tell me anything. Mason: I don't feel like being interrogated. Gina: Mason! I know you're not an angel. Boy, do I know that… And I won't be shocked. Now, Mary is very impressionable. And of course she would be intrigued by a man like you. And why wouldn't you take advantage of her? You're only human. Mason: Gina, whatever you think our relationship is it doesn't include unlimited access to my private feelings or my private life. Gina: All right. Don't tell me anything. I know enough. Mason: Oh, now come the threats, right? Gina: I know why you are so attracted to Mary. It's nice to be with somebody… that… doesn't know all about you. They think… that you're… charming and wonderful all the time, because they don't know any better. And that's nice. But the problem is it doesn't last. Eventually she's gonna find out all about you. Mason: If you say one word to Mary about you and me, you can forget whatever we have between us. Gina: Well, I can for… forget about it anyway now, can I? Mason, it doesn't matter what I say to Mary. Everybody in the house knows about it. Eventually she's gonna find out about it anyway. Look, the thing to do is to be with somebody… that does know about you. I mean somebody that knows things about you that you wish they didn't know. But it doesn't really matter because they… they love you anyway. And… it's the only way things can work out. Nothing else can last. (kisses him on the lips) Oh, Mason. I wish you'd be nice with me. You really should be. Mason: I should be a lot of things I'm not. Mary comes downstairs. Mary: Excuse me. I'm going out for a little while. I will be back long before my shift starts. |
