Chapter 80 — The Meeting With The Ghost
The casual meeting with his father in his own house actually upset Mason that he almost lost the case that he hardly worked out in the court. After making a big effort he managed to take himself in hands and lead the case to the victorious end. He does not understand what's wrong with him.
Walking out the court building, Mason stops and thinks where he's going. He did not wish to back home and could not take Mary's questions because he did not know answers. The decision comes gradually. Mason turns to the coast. To the place where he was still a boy at last time.
At the same time Mary thinks about Mason and CC's last meeting. She surely knew that CC and Mason are at swords points. However she never saw that Mason acted like that. No reasons did making worse their relationships. Or reasons were? Mary remember CC's words that Mason did not answer his calls. If recently some were happened between them? However, no. Mason begins strange acting even yesterday, after their visit in her mother's house in Ventura. Actually may be Theda said him something bad? Or he's just tired?
The bell at the door breaking up her thoughts. Mary accepted children from Christie and changing them together with her. That did not prevent her to glance at the clocks. Christie noticed her acting: "Do you wait for someone?"
"Mason."
"Is something going wrong between you and him?"
"No, it's Ok. And what about you and Jimmy?"
"While all is goes like clockwork," her sister smiled. "He's so nice!"
Mason parked his car on the roadside and walk out on the beach. The landscape a little changed for last 20 years, and this place is giving him some depressingly feeling. What for he came here? He's feels bad now even without its adding impression. But he cannot force himself out here. Something held him here, something as if a thing was lost.
"Mason!" he suddenly heard the familiar voice and unwillingly turned back. Nearly he saw Mary's mother.
"Do you spy me?" Mason blurts out almost not restraining his temper. "What you want from me?"
"I spied nobody," Theda press up her lips. "You are rude."
Mason kept silent, and Theda continued: "I'm often walking here so there is nothing surprising at my presence here. But what you doing here? Alone."
"I would want be alone here," Mason slipped out.
"But I thought that you said what Mary and babies are not with you? I did talk with Christie recently, and I know that yours did not go out anywhere."
"I'm did not speak about Mary. I mean those who--" he's not ended the sentence.
Theda puzzled looked at him, but then she nodded.
"Ghosts," she uttered. "You mean those who were here long time ago."
Mason freezes. She was right. He cautiously turned his head and like if it was in reality he saw a little boy who was sitting at water. The boy who was born with a silver spoon in a mouth, but not had most important in child's life — his own mom.
Theda still talking something about these place's legends which she subtracted in some newspaper, but Mason did not listen her.
"I'll go," he murmured finally. "Thanks you, Theda."
"You're welcome," she surprised replied and call at his back. "Send my love to my daughter!"
Mason comes back home and surprised to hear the silence in the apartment.
"Mary!" he called, but nobody answered. "Mary!"
In the apartment was so deep silence that he was frightened. He rushed to the bedroom, being afraid to see empty closets that would testify that Mary left him and will not return. But instead he saw so the idyllic picture that his mouth was involuntarily stretched to ears to the wide smile.
Mary slept in the hair, on both her sides there were bassinets with peacefully sleeping babies. All three slept so deeply that no one heard his arrival.
However Mary quickly felt Mason's presence in the room. She wake up and sat. "Mason?"
"Yes, it's me. Hug me."
Mary hugged her husband, feeling that some is changed inside him.
"What is wrong?" She whispered.
"All right," he answered. "All of us will be all right."
