Mark, having promised to help Mary in the charitable clinic, mysteriously disappears and Mary can hardly manage with a large quantity of patients. The door suddenly opens and Mother Isabel, a friend of Mary from the convent enters. Mary is very glad to see her, especially because Sister Isabel offers her help in the clinic.
Mark appears late in the evening and he is drunk. Mary attacks him because he has failed her and Mark says he was in the morgue at the identification. He identified a woman looked like his wife. Mary tries to comfort him and suggests walking at the Capwell's mansion.
Mary and Mark are talking in the gazebo. Mark tells about his wife who has just disappeared from home and that he has been looking for her for a long time. Mary comforts Mark and her arms went round him.
Mason, having entered the gazebo by chance, sees it. Having seen Mary and Mark, he just turns and goes away silently.
In the morning Mason talks to Mary as if she were a traitress and offends her a great deal.
During the lunch with Sister Isabel Mary tells her about the way Mason treated her. The latter fairly presumes that Mason is jealous of her to Mark. At the beginning Mary doubts about it but then, having thought twice, agrees and returns to the Capwell's mansion.
