In the next time having noticed Mason, Mary deliberately makes his go to the reconciliation room, and having made sure he is there, begins talking to his as if he were a priest. |
She tries to learn what he wants out of her, complains on his behavior, tells about her doubts. Mason is ironical even in this situation but "advises" her to run risks and to be with him. |
Then Mary hears Sister Isabel calling her and goes out. Sister Isabel says Mark calls Mary, before answering Mark, Mary says to Sister Isabel that she has made a decision. Mason, who is still in the reconciliation room, hears this. |
Mary says to Mark she will come back to Santa-Barbara soon. He is happy because of his recovery from the impotence, and does not allow her to explain anything over the phone. At the end of their conversation he asks Mary to say she loves him. Mary answers that "she cares for him". |
Mason, who is trying to slip out of the church behind Mary's back, hears this. He believes she has decided to stay with Mark and goes away silently. He does not hear she says to Sister Isabel that her marriage to Mark is over. |
