Part 18
In the doorway of the Orient Express Steve angrily reminds Mary that she stay away from Mason. Offended Mary says she hates Mason. Steve asks so why she danced with him. And why she's dress like that. Mary does not want to talk about it and offers to go home, but at the last minute she remember that she forgotten her purse at the table. She wants to go after it, but Steve says that he does. |
Mason is sitting at the table with CC and Sophia. He explains that he did want to be close to Mary because Ted's case. CC agrees that it would be smart but he guesses that Mason should be focused on Ted's defense. The trial starts tomorrow morning. They discuss Ted's case. |
Steve approached them and takes Mary's purse. Sophia and CC goes back at their table, and Steve and Mason are sparring. |
At the end Steve says that he don't expect much difficulty getting a motion banning against Mason. A protective order. To enjoin him from harassing Mary. Mason replies that he is the one who will be getting a protective order. To keep Mary sister from making improper advances to him. |
Steve laughs and says it's unlikely the judge buy into the image of a nun as a seductress. Mason ironically says that a step brother always is the latest to know and advises him to talk to Mary.

Steve and Mary back home. Steve can not believe that Mary really left the order.
Mary asks him to help her explain all to Theda and Christie. But Steve furious. The time is incredible! In night before the trial! He worked very hard through a certain image of his family. And it's just blown it! Mary did not understand what kind of image he says. Well, sure! Lower class family with high morals but by our hard working mother with children who are responsible and caring. Stepson who worked its way through law school made it to the DA's office. The daughter who had the calling to became a nun. But suddenly she's not a nun anymore! |
Mary did not understand why he attacked her. The guilty person is Ted, not she is. Steve said through clenched teeth that she gave a pureness to their family. Mary says she does not know that it was her function. Steve still cannot understand why she left the monastery. Mary says that she know the cause of her leaving but not sure in her reasons of joining. |
She sits down on the sofa. Steve sits down also and says that she wanted to run away from the family. Mary corrects him that she hated her life and wanted run away like Christie. She was just luckier than her sister. Steve says that he did his best to protect them. He knows that his father make their lives like hell and he was glad when he finally walked out. Mary says that her joining the order had a lot of reasons. She missed her own father and could not cope with problems. She found herself more home on the streets than did her own house and start getting into drugs. |
Steve says he did not know it. Mary says she didn't get very far into them because she was scared. She did choose between home where everybody was angry and miserable all the time and the streets. Steve says that Theda was drunk most of the time. Mary says that it was her way to escape from reality. And Mary's way was to joining the convent. The place where she feels safe. Where all the decisions were made for her - like when you wake up, when go to work and when to pray. And it's worked for a while. "Until now," Steve says grimly. |
Mary says there are women who really have the calling. They'd smart, sensitive persons. They just don't have the problems with authority that makes them wonderful nuns. She always envied them. Steve not sure that she'll able to living not having the convent and not come back later. Mary says that she think that she do. She can't live like that anymore. She has not a patience to be a nun. She couldn't pray away her frustration and her anger about the suffering of the world. And after what happened with Christy she cannot ignore it anymore. |
Steve suddenly comes to the conclusion that all is not lost. He will present her leaving as her personal cost for be here for her poor sister and for the sake of family!

Mary sits at home and says to herself that she know that she made the right decision. But why she so scared now?
The phone rings and she winces. Mary picked it up. It's Mason. |
He asks her not to hang up: he just calling to apologize. He says that Steve had a right to throw a punch him. He was behaving very badly toward her. Not only on the dance floor but all time. She just cut her ties with the place that's been her home for several years, giving up the entire way of life. All he could do was badger her and make fun of her. Mason says that he is thoroughly ashamed of himself for it. And his only defense is that he is wound up because of this trial. |
He stops and asks Mary if she still there. Hearing muffled confirmation, he continues. He knows that she must be kind of scared now. Anyone would be. Even someone as strong as she is. And she is strong even though she may not feel like it right now. Loyal, and loving, and he don't think Christie could have a better friend. She needs Mary. He know that's one reason she left the convent and can't tell how much he admire her. |
Mary continues to be silent, but her tears become run. Mason thanking her that she's listening, not hanging up on him. |
He pulls the levers. Mary puts her hand down and crying. |
