On the way to the hospital, in the emergency ambulance, Mark asks Mary to accept his ring. Mary does it and puts the ring on her finger. |

Mason, who is at the casino, is informed that the explosion has occurred at the Capwell's mountain house. Mason realizes that Mary could suffer, as she was there. He and Amy run to the hospital. |
At the hospital Mason finds Mary scared, disappointed but alive. |
Mary says to Mason that Mark is wounded severely and lost a lot of blood. |
Mason tries to comfort Mary but she worries about Mark a great deal. |
The doctor brings Mark's belongings. He says that Mark is still trying to survive and asks Mary about his relatives. She answers he has no relatives. |
At this moment Mason notices the ring on her finger. Mary confirms that it is Mark's ring and says to the doctor that she is Mark's fiancee. |
Mark is taken to the surgery, and Mason and Mary stay at the hospital and talk. |
Mason tries to clear up the reason why Mary is going to marry Mark - out of love for him or out of pity for the dying. Mary confesses she has a pity for Mark but says that it is not the only reason why she is going to marry him. |
Mark is operated but his condition is still bad. Mary and Mason enter his chamber. Mark asks Mary to leave them for a few minutes, as he wants to speak to Mason tete-a-tete. |
When Mary leaves the chamber, Mark asks Mason to take care of her when he is gone. Mason answers bitterly that they do not need his blessing and that he has to survive for Mary's sake, because she needs him. |
