After the rape Mary is shocked. Finally Mark understands what he has done and tries to comfort her. Mary, like a sleep-walker, dresses and goes away, although Mark tries to stop her. |
At the Capwells' house entrance she meets Mason. He sees something wrong with her and tries to persuade her to speak about it. But Mary can only repeat "I tried" and asks Mason to hold her. |
Mason holds her and then says that Dylan has died and the warrant against Kelly is issued. It makes Mary get away from what has happened. Mason says he has to go to the police station because of Kelly's accusation and suggests going to Mark to pick up her things. But Mary refuses strongly. |
Mason tries to figure out what is wrong with her but Mary says she will go to bed. She goes to the house, and Mason is staying out for a while being torn between the intention of going with his sister and staying with Mary. When he finally goes away, Mary goes out again. Alone. |
The only person Mary takes into confidence is Sister Isabel. She arrives immediately and kicks away Mark, who comes to the Capwells' house to talk to Mary. Sister Isabel persuades Mary to tell Mason everything but Mary doesn't want to do it, being afraid that Mason won't understand it and blaming herself for not resisting Mark effectively enough. |
After the judge's decision to place Kelly to the insane asylum, Mason returns home and goes to Mark to take Mary's things. He tries to figure out what has happened between Mark and Mary but, of course, Mark doesn't answer. Mason takes Mary's case and goes away.
In the next day Mark goes to the Capwells again and, in spite of Sister Isabel's persuasions, Mary agrees to talk to him.
Mark tries to defend himself, explains that he wanted to show Mary that he was a sound man. Mary asks him if he understands that it was a rape. Mark admits it. Mary says Sister Isabel thinks she should call the police. Mark grows angry and gives Mary a telephone receiver offering to call there right now. |
Meanwhile Sister Isabel tries to find Mason and leaves him a message that Mary needs him as soon as possible. |
Mary goes into her room; Mark refuses to go away and waits for her downstairs. Sister Isabel is trying to make him go away but she fails until Mason's arrival. He asks what Mark is doing here. |
Mark doesn't have time to answer, as Mary goes downstairs. Mason asks her what has happened. Mary says she will explain it after Mark goes away. Mark doesn't want to go but Mary insists. Mark leaves the house. |
Mary is holding Mason and crying. Mason asks what Mark has done to her. Mary moves over and goes to the living room. |
Mason follows her, saying that as far as she has called him, something very serious has happened. Mary says it is not important now but she avoids looking at him. Mason approaches her from another side and asks what Mark has said. |
It causes Mary's new tears. She is holding him and crying. Mason is trying to comfort her, he says she doesn't have to tell him what has happened but she should remember that he is with her and he loves her. Mary can't help sobbing; she doesn't answer anything, just holding him tighter and tighter. Mason says he cannot stand it anymore and he is going to kill Mark if he has done something to her. |
Mason's words scare Mary a lot and she asks him not to say this anymore. Mason doesn't understand what exactly he shouldn't say but Ted interrupts their conversation and Mary uses it to escape the unpleasant conversation. |
