Part 20
Mason on the phone, explaining to someone that the case of Ted is the top priority and should be thrown all the power. |
Ended the conversation Mason comes to Mary and takes her book. He asks is it a good book and then claims that Mary stayed here not for the reading. She could've gone home during the recess with her sister but she didn't. She stayed because she's having some doubts. Something's troubling her about Christy and about herself. Why don't her tell him about it? |
Christy rushes around Steve's apartment and eventually finds his shirt that he wore during the rape. She takes off the phone and asked the operator to give her a police. |
Mary angrily says that he is too much imagines. Mason says her doubts written on her face. Clearly she not sure who's innocent and who's not anymore. |
Mary says that she believes in her sister. Mason begins to talk about a typical rape offender, but Mary interrupts him: she studied psychology and aware that they come from broken homes; they have neglectful, sometimes abusive parents. She has a very similar family situation. And Steve has. It means nothing. |
Mason quietly says that the kind of violent attack that happened to Christy belong to "anger rapes" when the beating and the punishment seems to be the main intent, the sex almost secondary. In fact most of these men have other sexual outlets: wives, girlfriends, what have you. He has yet to hear of a rapist who was a virgin like Ted. It's not the only difference. These men have histories of violence, consorting with prostitutes, harassing other women until they zero win on the victim. Granted, these profiles may be general simplifications, but she doesn't think that somebody who knew Ted would have noticed something amiss? Christy was brutally raped. May be she blotted out the entire incident. May be she knows who did it but she's terrified to say. But if that's the case, then God help her. 'Cause that means that a man with a profile like the one she just heard is still out there... Watching her... She listens to her sister. She trusts her. If anybody can find out what she is not telling us, Mary can. |
Christy on the phone the police. She tries to anonymously report that she has evidence in the case of Ted, but Steve interrupts the conversation. Frightened Christy sorry. Steve comes to her, recalling that she wanted a rest and said his apartment was quieter but actually she's going to go to calls, phone calls... |
Christy said that if he ever touches her she would tell the police. Or on the court. She can not keep say that it was Ted. Can she say that there was the dark and she doesn't remember? Steve asks if Cruz talks to her about the fiber analysis that doesn't match to Ted's clothes. Christy says that Cruz knows someone else did, not Ted. Steve says that the pair of fibers makes no difference, but the whole shirt is real evidence. Especially with his name on the label laundry. Christy said that she's going to leave it anonymously; she would not have to point to him. |
Steve nasty laughs and says that of course she would not. And she took his shirt just to fit. Christy wants to go back to court but Steve pretend to offer up his shirt to her and then throws it like a noose around her neck asking why she can not keep say that it was Ted? |
Mary says that if she wanted to, she wouldn't know how. What is she gonna say? "Christy, are you lying?" Mason says Christy's not gonna tell her the truth if she thinks the lie she told to begin with is going to win Mary's undying disapproval. Mary says that Christy knows her better than that. Mason doubt that she often talked with Christy about her life since she left home and wonder if Mary knows that Christy been picked up twice for soliciting? She got off, but she was picked up. Mary says she does not believe him. Mason says she simply defending herself from the truth. Mary asks him to stop. |
Mason wants to leave, but Mary stops him and asks him what else he knows about Christy. |
Mason shows her Christy's police file. She stole Lockridge candlesticks, but brought them back eventually. She also stole a locket, but she brought that back too. He shows her the application to a massage parlour, evil repute. They turned her down. She was underage at the time. And depositions from six of her man-friends in four different states. All of them saying approximately the same thing that Christy was "a modern willing partner". |
Mary painfully listens and then asks if Mason is going to use the information in court. He says that not unless he have to. Mary admits that she's shocked and said that Christy obviously didn't want her to know about her troubles. Mason says that she has a chance to stop being Good Sister Mary and start being a real sister to Christy. He says that they're keeping the witnesses in the conference room outside of the courtroom until they're called in. And she can talk heart to heart with Christy there. |
Mary stunned by the news that she going to be a witness. Mason said that if the DA doesn't call her Mason will. "Why?" Mary asks.
Mason says that he does not know yet and then asks her don't take that personally. He has to do what he can for Ted. He says that the way he think of her as a person not going to change no matter what happens in there and asks her remember that. |
Steve asks Christy say that she forgives him and takes off a noose from her neck. He burns his shirt and offers Christy to just forget about it. Steve asks Christy to say that she forgive him and then asks to show it. |
He starts to kiss her, but at that moment the door knocking. It's Theda. Steve hastily hides traces of burned shirt and opens the door. |
Theda sees that Christy was crying and comforts her. Steve does not allow Theda to see shirt's ashes, but she wants that they should all sit down and talks about something positive. Steve says that they will miss DA Patterson's opening remarks. Theda admires the fact that Steve is so talented: he wrote the speech for the prosecutor, and his father could not even write a letter. She says that he can tell them this. Steve replies that the he has the text and can read it right here. |
Ted and Christy listen as Steve reads the DA's opening statement. |
In the meantime people gathers in the courtroom. Judge takes his place. |
The bailiff read out the record. District Attorney Patterson begins his opening statement. |
Meanwhile Steve ends it. Theda gasps when she looking at the clock and says that they started without them! They really have to go to the court. |
