Mark asks Mary when she learned about it, Mary answers it was not long ago but she is sure that he is not a father. Mark says she cannot be sure and he understands that she is so anxious to have the annulment because of the child. Mary threatens to tell Mason about the rape. Mark says he will not abandon the child who can be his. And he considers the rape to be an act of love. |
She asks him to stop teasing her and says that Mark owes her because of the rape. Mark becomes sympathetic and he says he will step aside but if the baby happens to be his, Mary would allow Mark to give the baby the name of McCormic. He gives Mary time to think and goes away. Mary tries to find Mason but she fails. |
Mason runs across Mark in the bar. He says some biting words about the brandy Mark is drinking and reminds they will have a hearing about the annulment the next day. |
Mark says he knows about Mary's pregnancy. Mason says they should have been together from the very beginning. Mark loses his temper and says he can be a father of Mary's child. |
Mason does not believe. Mark insists on it, he says they consummated their marriage after Mason had seduced her and guesses that Mary wanted to compare them. Mason calls Mark a scoundrel. Mark offers to ask Mary about it. Mason goes away. |
Mark calls Mary to the clinic and warns her that Mason knows they had sex. He could hardly hang up when Mason calls her. He says he has seen Mark. Mary says she knows about their talk and she is sorry. |
Astonished, Mason asks: "It's true, isn't it?" Mason's uncle, Grant Capwell who is eager to persuade Mason to help in the struggle against Mason's father, prevents Mason from the talk and Mason does not hear Mary saying that he will understand everything when she explains. |
Mary thinks they were disconnected and hangs up. Finally Mason manages to get rid of Grant but he can hear the ringing tone only. |
Mark call on Mary at the clinic. Mary says he acted meanly. Mark insists that Mason provoked him and he would learn about it anyway. And he says he will not allow Mason to raise his child. Mary says it is a vengeance on Mason rather than love for the baby. Mark denies this, as well as the fact of the rape. |
Mary says she will tell Mason everything; Marks answers that he will deny it and nobody will believe her. Mary is sure Mason will believe her. Mark insists on her telling Mason the truth, that it was not the rape, as she neither cried nor struggled. He just seduced her and he loves her. And now he just wants to protect his rights. |
Mark goes away. In a while Mason comes to the clinic. Mary tries to talk to him but Mason thinks he needs no explanation, as everything is clear. He says with pain that he trusted her as he never trusted anybody before and he would stake his life she never would have lied to him. |
Mason: "You were once a nun, lived in the convent, behind a lot of walls. I've been living behind a lot of wall to, different kind, a kind you can't see but they protected me just the same, I felt safe behind them, be?cause I knew nobody to hurt me, be?cause I wouldn't let anybody behind the walls until I met you. I've never know anybody like you before, you didn't talk the same, act the same, I liked that a lot, so I invited you to join me. Oh, hell, I just get you right inside with me. And there was a two of us against the world. I liked that even better. I learned from your wisdom, to courage from your strict, you were an inspiration, revelation. I trusted. I trusted you with my soul and until tonight I would stake my life that you never ever would have lied to me. Somewhere along a line I guess I just misread all the signs, I can't think of another explanation, can you?" |
Mary: "Yes. It's really simple one. When Mark told you that we consummated our marriage he just left down very important detail. He raped me." |
