Part 12
Cruz is talking to Santana at the police station. Mason appears and says that Cruz has already been 15 minutes late for lunch with Eden. Santana goes away. Mason says that the last time he saw Eden, she was going to see Cruz. Did anything happen to them?
Cruz is not too polite; he asks Mason what he wants. Mason says that Christie managed to pass the test on lie detector. Cruz answers that it is just a machine. Mason says that now she doesn't have any reason to change her evidences. They are discussing Ted's case. Mason says moodily that the only person that Christie seems to trust to is Mary. Moreover, she is a nun. Cruz doesn't believe that Mary will help them. Mason is much more sanguine.

"Do you want to say that you believe that?"
Ted tries to calm down and presumes that she doesn't remember well the rape and confused him with the rapist. Christies denies it. Ted asks her to tell the truth.

She confirms that she knows the rapist, so does Ted. But then she says: "It was you". Ted springs back. Christie says weepingly that she can't change her evidences, she can't do anything. Ted says she can if she admits that she lies. "I can't!" Christie cries. "Because it is not a lie", she adds.
Ted asks if she knows what term he can spend in jail. 20 years! It is a whole life. These 20 years Laken and he will communicate through the bars. Does Christie know what plan he had for the next 20 years?
Christie says she doesn't care. Ted outlines the picture of Laken's and his family life, his dream. He says that it depends on Christie if it will become true. Won't she be sorry about her lie?

Mary asks why he didn't arrest Ted in the restaurant. Cruz answers that it was him who was hit by Ted and it depends on him whether to make noise because of it or not. He decided not to do it. Mary doesn't agree with it, Ted was released to bail on condition that he won't see Christie.
Cruz says that the restaurant is a public place and they might meet by chance. Mary doesn't thing it was an occasional meeting. Cruz insists that the only thing that suffered was his own jaw.
Both of them don't notice Mason approaching. He is listening to them in silence.
Mary asks whether he was engaged with Ted's sister earlier.
Cruz offers her addressing to another policeman if she doesn't like him. Mary answers that another policeman should take Ted's case, as Cruz believes he is innocent, doesn't he?
Cruz says that the case is being investigated.
"Why?" Mary asks. "You mean Christie is a liar? Or is it that she's new in town and that Ted is from one of the founding families?"
Cruz says that the investigation doesn't depend on all these, including his own feelings.
"What do you take me for, inspector?"
"A lady who is very upset. Whose sister has been badly hurt. And who I am not going to give the chance to say anything else you might regret."
Cruz goes away. Disappointed Mary pulls her chain with the cross; it gets torn, and falls down.
Mason comes from the shade and takes the chain.

"Did you drop something?" He gives it to Mary.
She looks in surprise. "It's broken..."
"Shouldn't be too hard to fix?"
"I've had this on since the day I took my vows."
Mason notices that she doesn't control herself and makes her sit on the chair. Mary can hardly help crying.
"I don't know what's wrong with me..." she says.
"Cruz handles a lot of people. Most of them do not have the nerve to talk back."
"You were listening?"
"Well, you weren't exactly talking in whispers."
Mason leans towards Mary, his face close to Mary's.
"Mary, you're wrong if you think Cruz is bent on protecting the Capwells. He's been a lot worse by our family than he has by yours."
Mary says that she has to go and stands up. Mason is not going to step aside.
He suggests that he can give her a lift but Mary refuses and says that she has to pick Christie up from Jade Perkins. She goes away and Mason realizes that Jade happens to be Ted's friend.
Cruz comes back. Mason goes away too.
