In the next morning Mary sees Mason painting again. But this time she approaches him and touches his shoulder. Mason turns back and understands he is unmasked.
Mary and Mason talk straightly.
Mason suggests Mary to look at his piece of work. She sees that she and Mark and also a figure that goes away are painted completely. Mason confirms her guess that the leaving figure is he. Then he puts a black piece of chalk in her hand and leaves, saying at last that he can be painted over.
Mary stops Mason, not letting him go. He says that he is the same, all his faults are still with him as well as what he has done to her, although he will never forgive himself for it.
Mary asks him to forgive himself but Mason says he cannot, as she was too vulnerable and he has spoiled everything and understood it too late. And now Mark won. Mary asks in surprise whether he really thinks so.
Mason says he has heard her conversation with Mark and realized from it that she is going to go back to Mark. Mary says she is really going to go to Mark but to convince Mark to divorce, not to stay with him.
Mason, not believing in this, asks her to repeat her words. Mary says her heart has never been with Mark, it has always been with Mason only. Mason holds Mary and she asks him not to let her go any more. Mason promises he won't.
This moment Sister Isabel comes into the church and sees Mason in the soutane holds Mary. She is angry and demands the explanations.
