The next day David Laurent's trial begins; he is accused of his wife's murder. Mason is an accuser and Julia is a defender. Julia and Mason one after another make an opening speech, then Cruz's examination takes place. During the break Courtney says to Mason that there is a woman who had affair with David and who can prove that David is a murderer. The judge grants Mason's, request to delay the hearing until the next day in connection with the probable witness. Mason and Cruz have the Sheila Carlyle search warrant issued. Cruz finds a love letter addressed to David in her hatbox. Cruz and Mason take the letter and decide to subpoena Sheila. |

At the Orient Express bar Mary notices Mason and wonders why he is already out of the courtroom. Mason says he got free earlier than he expected. their table at the restaurant is not ready yet, and as they both lost their appetite at seeing each other, Mason and Mary leave the restaurant and go to Mason's apartment to make love. |

Mason and Mary are kissing with passion but Mary stops suddenly, recollecting the rape. Mason reacts immediately in fear that he rushes her. Mary convinces him that everything is all right. They are declaring their love again and again and making love. |

Mason and Mary are in the bed. Mason caresses her face and feels tears. Mary says it is because of happiness. She says he never knows what he did for her. He taught her how to live. Without him she would have been afraid all her life. She does not answer Mason question what she was afraid of. |

The doorbell rings. Mason goes to open the door and comes back with a subpoena in his hand. He says he was waiting for this subpoena and now it is to be delivered before the next morning. So, he has to do it by himself. |

Both of them do not want Mason to go, Mary reassures Mason that they will have plenty of time for them. Mason complains that expectation is unbearable. |
